Contradictory? Valerie likes to think of herself as kind and benevolent. After all, she became a doctor to save lives. But that's also part of the problem. She's a doctor - did very well in school too - and darn proud of it. This gives her the arrogance to look down on others. People with less schooling, people struggling because of society, people who simply don't know as much as her; they all annoy her. She will be patient; she will listen. But when she responds, there's that condescending tone. She knows when she knows more. At the same time, she holds high respect for anyone she deems smart or capable enough.
[break][break]
Another aspect of contradiction is her kindness. She loves helping people, she does. But sometimes, she wonders if it's because it makes her feel superior or if she truly wants to make the world better. The self-satisfaction from helping others makes her feel guilty.

[attr="class","omapponetabs3"]SUBJECT BIOGRAPHY
][attr="class","omapponebio"]
[attr="class","omapponebio1"]
Born to an upper middle class family, Valerie didn't have much to worry about growing up. Her biggest problems were her two younger siblings and doing well in school. Her parents were typical Asian parents; they emphasized education above all else. That wasn't a bad thing. Because of them, she developed a love for reading and learning. At school, she was top of her class. Exceedingly proud of that, she unconsciously looked down on the less accomplished. Her sheltered lifestyle made her naive: they just needed to work harder. She wasn't aware of the problems of the less fortunate. [break][break]
The other defining characteristic was her role as an older sister. Her younger siblings are 10 and 12 years younger than her, so she was old enough to help raise them. A lot of the teaching and homework help became her responsibility. It was with her siblings that her love of children really developed. Because of how socially inept she was, the people she spent the most time with were her siblings. A typical interaction involved her smothering a younger sibling in hugs and kisses and the recipient pushing her off and running away.[break][break]
Doctor. From high school, she knew she wanted a career which involved people. She loved the idea of helping others and her sense of superiority agreed. After a bought of severe sickness kept her youngest sibling in bed for weeks, she knew she wanted to be a doctor. Somewhere along the line of her schooling, she decided to specialize. After much deliberation, she chose gastroenterology, or the study of the digestive system. She specializes in children but can treat adults if necessary.[break][break]
Corruption? Living in her rose colored world, corruption was something that didn't seem to apply to her. She lost no sleep over it. She found a job at a local hospital - one of the larger practices - and focused on her job. [break][break]
And then, a case came up. A little boy, from a poor family. He had gone to the ER then the pediatric ICU. It was around holiday time, and the doctors were frequently away. Because of that, primary care of the little boy fell into less experienced doctors. The little boy's illness was severe, and the doctors were at a loss. Hastily, they made a judgement - a diagnosis. The parents had also been doing their own reading. Though not medically experienced, they used the internet to match their child's symptoms. They came up with something totally different from the doctors. They brought their findings to the doctor; the doctors denied it. When the doctors ran more tests on the little boy, the parents asked for the data. Continuing to match the data, they were held their belief that the doctors were wrong. They then attempted to find a second opinion.[break][break]
Here Valerie stepped up. She looked into it and found, to her surprise, the doctors had been wrong. They had been too rushed, overconfident of their abilities. But what to do? If she wrote up a second opinion, the doctors would not be happy. The family could sue, and the doctors who were wrong could lose their licenses. On the other hand, she couldn't just sit by and let the little boy die...[break][break]
So she wrote, gave the boy a second diagnosis. But this was in vain. The other doctors came together and managed to write off hers as inexperience. The hospital fired her - they said she was lucky not to have lost her license. Lucky? Valerie swore she was blacklisted. None of the other hospitals would hire her. Frustrated, she decided to start fresh somewhere else. She moved to Seattle; the area was known for medicine (and tech). But here too, nobody would hire her. Her only options now were to try and start her own practice, or find some other occupation. She chose the former. The only customers that would seek her out were people with nowhere else to go. They don't ask her questions, and she doesn't ask them questions.
