he grinned, "my name is finnley grayson. i prefer to go by finn though." the man (boy?) then paused for a moment, almost as if he was in thought, before continuing, "i was born in brooklyn, so i've been exposed to all sorts of crimes and violence. that's kind of shaped me into who i am today, i guess." [break][break]
he took in a deep breath, "being in such a bad environment, i had to stay strong and stay away from bad influences. i held myself to higher standards and became involved in my high school, always doing something after classes. and even though i wouldn't call myself the brightest, i worked hard enough to get invited to the national honors society. i also did tons of volunteer work, especially when it came to veterans, and it made me realize just how satisfying helping people is. but..."[break][break]
the grin slowly turned into a bashful smile as he tilted his head to the side, "i know that just volunteering isn't enough for what i want to do. so... i want to reach further and do more for the people around me."[break][break]
"i want to be a hero."[break][break]
the response was nearly immediate. his employer stared. finnley stared back.[break][break]
then he coughed.[break][break]
"well, um, i mean—" he started out, his body temperature on the rise, "in my opinion, being a police officer is like being a symbol. of hope, of protection, of integrity... i have no real superpowers, but if i can define my life through making this world a better place, through making sure those who cry out for help receive it, through making sure innocent people feel safe, then... then i would feel like i've made a real difference. i could show people that heroes are real, and that there's one looking them right in the eye."[break][break]
"good question. i actually don't know!" he laughed. noticing the woman in front of him was not, it slowly died down. he coughed again. then sniffed.[break][break]
"well, everyone brings something different to the table.... i'm a greenhorn, so you may find someone with more experience. and if not that, maybe they're smarter than i could ever be. neither of us really know until it's all said and done, and it's going to be a difficult process to find out. but... like i said, everyone brings something different."[break][break]
there was a strange glint in his chocolate brown eyes. a fire hidden somewhere deep within. "i'm a clean slate with a drive. in a few years, i see myself sitting at the chief's desk. i'll learn and i'll grow. it's up to you guys how you use me, but without a doubt, seattle will one day be crime free. and you can bet my career on it."
