STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

• Born unplanned to a teen mother, Davia, and a gangbanging sperm donor of a father was Maverick Price. Being born in Tacoma, Washington's Hilltop area, known state-wide for it's rampant gang violence, almost guaranteed him a bleak and short future.
• His earliest memories are of his father's surprising return. Of a full house with a haze of smoke hanging in plain sight; of yelling and gunshots that lit up the sky like short-fused fireworks.
• School wasn't much better than his conditions at home, but he enjoyed learning and looked forward to hanging out with his friends.
• As he got older, however, his father began to take 'rightful' hold of his life. He taught Maverick to teach guns as toys and as a means to get whatever you wanted. Soon enough, Maverick was skipping school to have more father-son bonding sessions. Until eventually he'd dropped out before high school, and was running with his father's gang full time.
• Statistically, no one would have been surprised. No one would care, except for his mother. But she had little sway over what the father of her child was teaching her son. She had no power and so much fear.

BANG, BANG!

• During the years he should have been in high school, dreaming of college, hitting on girls and out with friends, he was out gangbanging. Everyone around him was doing it, and the only ones questioning it were angry old women. What did they know anyhow? He refused to open his ears to the cries of women who had already seen so much life lost.
• Unsurprisingly, Maverick made quick enemies with law enforcement. Before the age of 18 he'd been busted for several petty crimes, as well as for possession, intent to sell, and an armed robbery. The latter of which was on the cusp of his 18th birthday, and as such they decided to charge him as an adult.
• Maverick had killed people. But that's when he was out riding with his gang, and there were enough hands to cover up the deed. This had been a two man operation, but his partner had dipped out when the cops got too close, and Maverick wasn't a snitch. He took the full heat for the crime.
• What could have been up to 15 years in prison as a repeat offender, however, was much shorter thanks to the mercy of Maverick's Judge. He too had grown up on the streets of Hilltop, and seeing the potential for reform that Maverick could not even see in himself, he lessened the sentence and gave him the possibility of parole.
• His time in prison was far from pleasant. Rival gang members targeted him, there was pressure from his own gang to pull his own weight in the prison, and even his own father ended up in the slammer with a life sentence. At first, he stayed close to his gang, even though that had been the very thing that had gotten him locked up. But with time, he decided he wanted something better.
• Maverick spent five years in prison, and a year after on parole until his 24th birthday.

I WON'T BE A STATISTIC

• After he was released, Maverick's mother took him to live with his grandmother. She lived in Seattle, just a little ways North of Tacoma. But anywhere was better than Hilltop, especially when she was trying to keep her baby away from his old gang.
• Within this same year, Maverick sat his GED test and was accepted into university. All amazing feats considering he'd dropped out of high school and had a record.
• Before Maverick had finished his Bachelor's degree in Pre-Law, his mother passed. The doctors said it was organ failure due to heavy drug use and stress over the years. She had nothing to leave him in her will, but knowing she was proud of him for turning his life around was enough.
• After completing his Bachelor's degree at 28, he entered into law school for three years.
• Just last year, he sat his exam and became a certified judge. He was lucky enough to receive employment within his county, and has been working as a Judge for roughly seven months now.
• In his spare time, Maverick drives down to Tacoma and volunteers at their Boys & Girls Club. He encourages the youth to stay in school and to be more than a statistic.
