[attr="class","omapponebio1"]
"those poor girls... if no family takes them in, they'll likely be separated..."[break][break]
angry outbursts at classmates from the younger of the two, their aunt called in to discuss her behavior. kali is: loud and energetic at her best, volatile and screeching at her worst.[break][break]
"... anger management... parents... fire in... art... miss sullivan... please consider.... really think she... yes, of course..."[break][break]
kali sits outside the door to the principal's office, picking at the scabs on her knees, jolting as the door opens suddenly, head whipping back to shoot a childish glare at whoever had just opened it. "so? what's the verdict?"[break][break]
her aunt stares at her, and sighs, eyes sad. "i don't know why you treat me like the enemy, kali."[break][break]
her finger digs underneath a scab a little too hard at that and red wells up around her nail, quickly dripping down. the blonde girl bites her bottom lip, chewing at the chapped skin of it, and shrugs. "you're not the enemy, aunt caelia. but you're not my mother." her eyes are fixated on the blood running down her leg and so she misses the slight flinch her words cause, misses the hurt on her aunt's face. "but really, what's the verdict?"[break][break]
"he suggested therapy, and i agree. i think max could use it too, honestly."[break][break]
a sigh, and then she moves to stand up, blood splashing onto the floor from her open wound. "okay, i guess. can we go home now?"[break][break]
her aunt moves closer to her and places her hand on her shoulder, squeezing gently. "why don't we clean your leg up first, kali?"[break][break]
"okay," she whispers, head hanging down, jaw clenched and face scrunched up as fat teardrops drip down her face like the blood down her leg. her aunt squeezes her shoulder again, hand warm, and then pulls her in for a hug. they don't say anything more.
no. together, we stand. but prevailing is much harder than one thinks.[break][break]
there's a fire burning in her, like the one that burned her house down and her parents along with it. at first, the fire is a hot angry red, crackling and spitting bits of itself at others in an attempt to let them know how much it hurts - how much she hurts. the only one who's close to understanding is maxine, but even she dealt with the tragedy differently. the move from spokane to seattle, the adjustment into living with their aunt, the strangeness of a new school in the middle of seventh grade.[break][break]
it hurt, and she hurt, and the words some kids spat at her hurt too, but not as much as the pitying glances the adults gave them.not as much as she hurt others in return.[break][break]
and then - an escape. the local library was a haven to her, right across from her therapist's office, and while the therapy helped, the books and the place to be alone helped more. it was her paradise, and it remained that way for as long as it could.[break][break]
even while she went to college out of state, maxine attending with her, the libraries there just weren't the same as the original place that had brought her comfort.[break][break]
she beat that fire down into a warm flame, and -

nightmares of fire and pain, screaming in the night, and waking up coughing, choking on phantom smoke that still lingers, even months later.
