he parks the car on a narrow side street, in a manner delightfully inconspicuous to anyone who would pass by on the main street. the route to walker’s laboratory is familiar enough -- for someone who makes a living off being a getaway driver, he is remarkably terrible at navigating buildings. it is early still, and for the most part, he seems to be the only one in this part of the building. anyone with some vague semblance of a sleep schedule is likely asleep. [break][break]
that’s not to say that dera is necessarily a morning person; he is, however, the type of person who will try his very best to be helpful to his friends, even if it means breaking into their laboratory at an unholy hour of the morning to sneak in some food so that the aforementioned friend doesn’t argue with them. [break][break]
he’s only picking the lock, he reasons, not breaking the door down. maybe seeing that a locked door won’t spare him from dera’s well-intentioned stubbornness will persuade walker to give him a spare set of keys. it’d certainly save dera a lot of time, and a lot of weird looks. he offers a late-shift janitor an awkward smile.[break][break]
the lock gives way. dera, with the lunchbox tucked neatly under his arm, steps into the lab. slowly, and as quietly as he can manage, he begins his precarious trek towards the nearest empty surface, keeping an eye out for any stray scraps of paper that he could scribble a note on. it wouldn’t do just to leave an unlabelled box in walker’s lab without at least some sort of an explanation, after all.

It is easy to lose track of time in a room with no windows, when the time is displayed only on his phone and in the corner of his laptop. It's easy to lose track of time when as deeply absorbed in his work as Walker was. Synthesizing medicine wasn't easy and the work had him working long hours, but he neither minded or noticed. It was something to do. In this way, he was useful to the revolution and, more importantly, to Doctor X. As focused as he was, though, the sound of lock picks in the door was distinctive and deafening in the silence. Having picked more than his fair share in the past, he knew the sound for what it was. And he knew the trouble it meant. This lab was meant to be a secret, known only to Doctor X and, by most unfortunate circumstance, Waverly. So either it was Waverly looking to raise hell or he had a much bigger problem on his hands. Regardless, the solution of violence would be more than adequate enough no matter who it ended up being.[break][break]
It takes but a moment for Walker to grab his cane and tuck himself behind the door. He flips the lights off to obscure his position and movements. A few seconds later the door carefully opens and in steps the intruder. They are calm and take their time walking to a small space of counter not covered in equipment or a mess of papers. He waits until they set their bag down (who knows if there's anything dangerous in there) and steps away from it before creeping up behind him. Once upon a time, he'd been able to walk silent as a cat, a skill carefully refined during delinquency in high school and college and even a bit on the side after graduation. A skill that had very much atrophied in recent years. Still, he was able to get enough of a surprise as to be able to bring his cane down upon them with little struggle. His entire body screamed in protest. Every movement of such force and speed was a threat against himself, but adrenaline dulled the knife's edge and a dull knife was never enough to stop him.

it’s remarkably difficult to find a scrap of paper that looks relatively unimportant -- dera isn’t particularly gifted in medical terminology, and in his inexperienced eyes, just about everything looks important. he’s focused ; he doesn’t see note the shadow of a figure loom over, nor the tell-tale silhouette of a cane brandished like a sword until it is too late.[break][break]
pain explodes across his back, white-hot and lancing up his spine. there’s a strangled cry that escapes him, and now he’s scrambling for something -- anything -- to use against the assailant. it is instinct that drives him now, not the blind panic of someone mugged in an alleyway but that of a fighter, keenly honed, with all those sharp serrated edges.[break][break]
then -- recognition. the plastic knife in his hand breaks off from its original trajectory. “woah- wait- it’s me! dera!” the words stumble out, clumsy, panicked, apologetic. “i brought you lunch!”

"woah- wait- it’s me! dera! I brought you lunch!" Oh, that's right, he did know this place didn't he. Already half into the next hit, he adjusted suddenly to avoid collision, stumbled as a result, but caught himself on the counter's edge. He breathed heavy and as adrenaline faded quick like vapor he could feel the sharp pain and numbness overtaking his body. He shuffled, the counter and cane both as support, to the nearby chair and unelegantly dropped into it. His anger did not lessen now that he knew who the intruder was, and he glared at Dera with its full weight.[break][break]
"Why would you break in like that? What if I wasn't here and it was someone else? " He snarled, only barely able to hold onto his breath enough to sound threatening, "Boy, you could've been shot! You're lucky I don't have any knives here, because I for one would've stabbed you." A sigh hissed from between his teeth, then he clicked his tongue and rubbed his face. He controlled his breathing, forced it steady, and looked again at Dera. He did not look any softer, but his anger and frustration seemed to have been dulled, if only marginally. "What's today? And the time, if you will." He genuinely did not know how long he'd been in the lab. At some point he had fallen asleep, but he wasn't sure how long, just that it had been long enough for his neck to ache as a result. It hadn't been enough to keep him form continuing his work upon waking. He hadn't intended to work so long as to fall asleep on the job, but he'd become so absorbed that he'd forgotten entirely the passage of time. It felt good to work again, it did, but he doubted anyone would sing his praises if they found out he'd worked himself to the point of falling asleep in the lab.

he wants to wither away under the intensity of the glare. the cane arcs towards him, and he scarcely tries to dodge it, bringing his hands up instead in a useless block; frankly speaking, he'd rather get whacked across the head than face the mortifying ordeal of justifying his presence right now. it had been a good idea when he had thought about it. in retrospect, not so much.[break][break]
"i didn't want to disturb you, if you were sleeping," he offers weakly, in a voice he hopes is more dignified than a squeak. the knife is placed lightly back onto the container, as casually as he can manage, as though he most definitely was not wielding it as a weapon naught but two seconds before. what was he thinking, anyway? what was he going to do with a plastic knife? poke someone to death?[break][break]
the ache across his shoulders doesn't subside. it will most certainly bruise, he figures, and rubs at it ruefully. serves him right. "lucky me," he says lightly, crooking a sheepish smile. "it's tuesday, and a quarter past four a.m."[break][break]
"also, there's spaghetti, and a small ham and cheese croissant in there," he gestures vaguely at the lunchbox. then, more sincerely, "sorry. i'll knock next time."

"Tuesday?" He echoed with vague surprise. He chewed on the information for a moment, but didn't say anything further on it. He didn't admit that he'd hoped it was Sunday night, but settled for the more realistic idea that it was probably Monday. He'd come to the lab late Saturday night and somewhere along the line he'd lost track of an entire day. A little disconcerting, but it wasn't the first time. The lab had no windows to show the progression of time and while his computer had the time in the corner, he rarely, if ever, checked it. Once he set to work and found his rhythm, time was removed as a variable from the equation and he worked and worked and worked until he hit his limit or, in this case, someone interrupted him. Dera had suspicions of Walker's overzealous work ethic, of that he was sure, but there was no reason to demonstrate for him the full extent of it. He didn't want anyone hovering over him like a worried parent and he certainly didn't want anyone telling Alex about how he was working himself too hard or some other nonsense like that.[break][break]
He changed the subject. "It hurts, doesn't it." He stood up, steadier now, and walked across the lab to pull out a first aid kit. He may not have a medical degree, but he knew first aid well enough. "Take off your shirt, let me take a look." Injuries likely amounted to bruises, but ribs were fragile things and there was always the possibility of a broken one, regardless of how weakened the assailant may be.

there's a surprise to walker's voice that almost warrants a raised eyebrow, but frankly, there aren't any grounds to -- nor is dera particularly willing to -- pursue it any further. there's only so much he can push for, and he's at least glad that walker is letting him in with food. besides, the area of impact from the cane is starting to really sting. that'll leave a colorful bruise, no doubt. hesitantly, he draws a deep death, testing the boundaries of the injury and- oh, that hurt. "yeah," he admits begrudgingly, moving to pull a chair over. it hurts more than he cares to admit, without any adrenaline to dull the edge. dera hasn't made a habit of getting into a fight for quite some time now; frankly, he avoids it as best he can, so he figures that his ability to take a thrashing has diminished somewhat. it isn't a particularly pleasant realisation.[break][break]
he pulls his shirt over his head, holding it awkwardly in his hands as he waits. chances a cursory glance down to where a purpling line lays. "oh, that doesn't look ideal."

"Oh, that's not ideal at all, that's for certain." He observed with a cold edge, "Because, you know, an ideal situation would be one where I didn't think you were a burglar." He sat down next to him and pressed against the blooming lines of bruises. "Tell me if a spot hurts worse than the others." A bit of chitchat, then "Take a deep breath, as deep as you can. Does it hurt? How badly. One to ten." He was no doctor, he could only make an educated guess, but it didn't look like he'd broken any of Dera's ribs. The bruises hurt, that much was understandable, and they'd started to welt. He'd broken the skin just enough for pinpricks of blood to form on the skin, but not enough to bubble, let alone roll down his back. He rubbed some topical pain reliever over the bruises, then gave Dera a couple Advil and that was the end of the first aid.[break][break]
He tossed the first aid kit onto the counter and leaned back in his chair. He looked over at the food with a vague interest. "Did you make it yourself or did you buy it?" He asked, then paused, then continued, "Bring it here." He hated the idea of someone taking care of him. It reminded him of hospitals and friends and family fretting so much they were suffocating. His home stopped being just him, it was him and someone else. His mother, his father, a sister, a cousin, a family friend. And even in his own home he wasn't allowed to do anything himself. God forbid he even step foot in the kitchen. He hated people cooking for him, he hated people caring for him like he couldn't care for himself, but the fact of the matter is he was hungry and he did just beat Dera with his cane. At this point it'd be rude even by his standards to not at least give the food a chance.
