Q: To start off, tell us a little about your life. Where did you grow up? What was your childhood like? How did you first get into the music world?

The interviewer sat a few feet from Skyler. She held her notepad tight as if her whole life depended on it. White knuckles and sweaty palms has smudged the small written letters on the page. Her fingers constantly fidgeted around her pen or her hair. Despite all this, the woman’s eager eyes were fixated on Skyler. She displayed a smile just shy of an outward flirtatious behavior. How….revolting. Skyler returned the same seemingly flirtatious smile.

“Well, I was born and raised right here in Seattle. I was an only child” lies. “Growing up, I’d say I was pretty spoiled, but I doubt that’s a surprise to anyone,” he laughed and the interviewer joined in with obnoxious fits of giggling. don’t you get tired?

“Well, anyways, I don’t think I was that much of a wild child. That’s a misconception, people. Believe it or not, I was actually one of the top students in school and I probably would have stayed that way if I didn’t suddenly rebel to join the local rock band.” why don’t you tell them the real story instead…

✦ PLEASURE IS PAIN

Skyler was born and raised in Seattle. His mother, Naomi Linker was a professional pianist and his father, Alan Linker was a guitar shop owner. The two married happily and a few years later, they had their first child. Five years after, they were expecting a second one.

When Skyler turned five, his mother's swelling belly also hit the five month's mark. Naomi was recommended not to conceive any more children, but she knowingly took the risk. All Skyler understood at that time was that he was getting a baby brother. Mother always said it could be a sister as well, but he was determined it was a baby brother. Or else, would his sister kick his mother that harshly??

The preparations for the baby were coming smoothly. Skyler was slowly pushed out of his room to make space for his baby brother, but he didn’t mind. He was eager to meet the newest member of his family.

Amidst the excitement, everyone forgot that Naomi's consequences were long overdue. The devil finally took back what she owed six weeks before the baby was due. His mother was in pain. And there was blood, so much blood. It was as though his baby brother was purely constructed of blood. All Skyler remembered about that night was Naomi's howls and Alan's panicked footsteps.

✦ TREAD CAREFULLY

The Linker family was never the same after Naomi and Dylan's death. His father never found someone new and he never came home anymore. On a good day, Alan preoccupied himself at the store with a bottle of liquor. There was a point when Skyler constantly bombarded Alan with questions. ‘Where’s mom?’ But Alan was a changed man; distraught and easily irritable. He didn’t think twice before raising a hand against his boy.

When his grandmother invited him to live with her, Skyler didn’t question the why’s anymore. Alan had been taken away by authorities, but the details didn’t matter to Skyler. His father was gone now and that was that.

✦ GELLING MELODY

Nana Gelling's home wasn't exactly heaven. Damp walls, dusty lamps, and dangling webs filled the rooms, but Skyler never complained. At least the house was warm. Nana was warm. Though, if there was one thing she truly failed at, it was the cooking. Thanks to it, Skyler managed to grow up with numb taste buds...or at least he developed a special appetite for meat (especially beef).

While he adjusted to his new home, Skyler found a new hobby of making music. Nana Gelling had been a music instructor and the way she inspired her students through music intrigued Skyler. Ever since Naomi’s death, the young boy hadn’t appreciated anything that reminded him of her. With his nana’s support and encouragement, he began to follow his mother’s footsteps slowly and steadily. By the time he was in high school, music had become a large part of him. It was his escape, his comfort, and his passion.

Skyler’s time at Gelling house held the most precious memories. From childhood stories of his mother to one-on-one lessons with his grandmother, everything should have been kept safely in a time capsule. Sadly, reality was not as perfect. On his sixteenth birthday, Skyler blew out the candle and Gelling drew her last breath. everyone leaves.

✦ LIE TO ME

Skyler spent the last of his teenage years bouncing around relatives’ houses. He never stayed at one place too long. Since Gelling’s death, he focused on further pursuing music and in addition, dance as well. Although his skills were admirable on their own, his attitude remained largely problematic. Skyler was able to make "friends" that benefited his job resume, but that was the extent of his relations.

By 18, Skyler was scouted by a record label and on his way to be the musician he aspired. Upon entering college, he moved out of his aunt’s place, cutting all ties with his so called family. The beginning of his career was rocky. He was barely make ends meet with his new independent life, however, as his fame grew slowly, his deposits did as well. The rest of Skyler’s college career mostly consisted of constant partying. Anything that kept him distracted from real problems was welcomed.

Or at least that’s what he thought until the incident happened.

The officer sat a few feet from Skyler. He was a man well in his forties. He held himself with pride as he paced across the room. White knuckles and sweaty palms remained clasped underneath the table. There was no need to be nervous. This had all been arranged and rehearsed, but there Skyler was. “The name’s S-skyler. Skyler Linker. W-we are all close friends from the same college. Umm...umm, we were just having a good night out, you k-know? It wasn’t like that.”

”What wasn’t like what? Be more specific,” interrupted the officer with a hint of annoyance in his voice.

“S-she was fully sober when it happened.” lies. “When they both snuck off together, they were both sober. I would know. I was with them the whole night afterwards.” what have you done?

Skyler had agreed to lie on the condition that she and the baby she carried was to be taken care of fully. When he accepted so sincerely, Skyler naively believed him. If there was one person who would never lie to him, it was his friend of four years, right? Right.

Skyler snapped back to reality too little too late. She couldn’t carry the weight of the child, not by herself. It ultimately weighed her straight down from the top of the skyscraper. And what did he do? The bastard walked away without a scratch on him. The police turned a blind eye. The lawyers suited up in behalf of his honor. Amidst a scandal brewing on his career, all Skyler could do was lay low and helplessly watched all the power and wealth that made him invincible. If the system had failed, then there was now only one other way to fight.
