Sam is a thirty-two-year-old police detective, specializing in homicide cases. A cursory glance yields this: he’s respectful, and though he doesn’t usually initiate conversations he’s perfectly willing to hold one if approached. He doesn’t volunteer a lot about himself, though, and he tends to stay in his head. His superiors will care that he’s a hard worker, and that he has both a logical head on his shoulders and an eye for detail. He doesn’t usually need a break, but if he does he’ll walk to the nearest café and buy himself a something-lemonade. He takes night shifts without fuss: there’s always a slim book stashed away in his messenger bag for the quiet hours of the morning.[break][break]

He’s hardly more interesting outside of work. He goes to the gym at least three times a week. He doesn’t smoke, drink, or go to parties. He has few friends, one of which being a homeless man who lives around the intersection of Broadway and East John Street. In his spare time he likes to read, and sometimes he likes to sketch pictures of birds.[break][break]

His good friends know he’s not a big talker, and budding friendships will most likely be characterized by, as opposed to a meeting in the middle, the other party over-extending past the halfway point with sincerity. The reason is not malice but incredulity that somebody would take an interest in him, though he’s a surprising fount of knowledge and can most likely talk a little bit about everything. He would click well with other book-lovers and fans of literature. At his best he’s wry and reliable, and would be a loyal friend to anybody who breaches his cool front. He is, however, likelier to fight someone the closer he is to them. Though this is partly because he’s more comfortable with them than others, he can still be surprisingly nasty.[break][break]

It is extremely hard to get a rise out of him because he makes an effort to avoid people who rile him up; he’s an old hat at the “good cop, indifferent cop” routine and all its variants, and he’s never one to cause trouble. However, though he can endure most things with grace, he doesn’t like racists or queers, and he’ll be quick to avoid somebody if they fall into either category, interacting only when forced. Sam in rage is something I, personally, would only like to write after extensive role-play and build-up, so contact me if you’re interested in pursuing that facet of his personality and we can have a discussion!

Non-existent, thanks to a healthy dose of internalized homophobia. I imagine he tried dating during his undergraduate studies and ended up with a string of girlfriends that had all lasted about a week or so. Therefore I would love to write with those past lovers and see what they think of Sam now. He would have been kind and fairly thoughtful and relatively funny, but very detached, giving off the impression that he wasn’t as invested in the relationship as the other.[break][break]

As an adjusted, not-homophobic boyfriend he’s probably the same as he is around close friends, except he’ll kiss you too. Not in public, though.[break][break]

Plots that I’m interested in are: reconnecting with old friends ( he used to be extremely sociable when he was younger, and people who went to school with him would ping the difference between Sam then and Sam now immediately ); a new detective partner — his old one transferred out of the department so he’s flying solo ‘til he finds / is assigned a regular; a good friend of his who happens to be a proponent for all the things Sam avoids ( wine, sex, drugs, etc. ), and Sam taking care of them when they get truly messy; and anything else you can think of : )[break][break]

alright this might get sort of rambly, but i just want to throw out some of my thoughts on sam & nate and we can make sense of it later. their biggest commonality is probably their shared love for literature (and in nate's case, he likes philosophy, cinema, and art too, any thought-provoking form of media really.) they're also both low-key people with low-key pastimes who don't smoke, drink, or party. so on a superficial level, they seem compatible.

what i'm really interested in exploring is where they fundamentally clash, i think: their worldviews and deeper inclinations. nate wants danger and excitement. sam does not. nate's very, very open to opposing and diverse perspectives and comfortable with intellectual, moral, and emotional uncertainty (we talkin bout negative capability here, thanks pom). i see nate as like a sponge or mirror, interested in probing very deeply into other people's lived humanity but very nebulous in terms of his own core identity. he can't really pin down who he is or what he stands for, and nate's ok with that. sam, conversely, strikes me as quite closed-off and diametrical in his thinking. he's righteous and narrow-minded. there's good and there's evil. i got super inspired by the tiny excerpt of tana french i read so: whereas sam pursues truth in his work and personal life, nate pursues stories, be they fabricated or real, or something in between. sam's argumentative and nate's passive, which doesn't necessarily mean he'll concede the point in an argument but rather that he's not overly attached to his position and he doesn't really care about who's right. and finally, sam has a complicated relationship with judaism (reverent, but not religious), whereas nate's solidly agnostic (with an unreligious upbringing). i'd peg him as a humanist/existentialist really, but i also think nate's fascinated by religion as a topic and would definitely pick sam's brain about his jewish background given the opportunity.

so some more concrete ideas i had after reading sam's plotter are: they run into each other at the café because nate's a slave to exorbitant espresso drinks. they talk about books — you pick a book and let's gooooooo. sam catches nate sneaking back to work in the pd and is like "r u srs u're on medical leave. that means LEAVE." is sam good at cooking? because nate's horrendous in the kitchen (ask van about the egg incident) and i don't even care, they should cook. on a more somber note, since you mentioned wanting to murk lucky eventually, maybe nate's the physician who ended up witnessing his last moments in the er. if lucky's been to the er before (which is very plausible since county hospital emergency depts are a hotspot for the homeless and indigent, unfortunately), nate would even recognize him. rip lucky. and lastly, because sam hulking out is something i desperately want to see, maybe he lets his anger slip towards nate as they get closer? aman pt. 2: electric boogaloo? : ) i quote, "[sam] is, however, likelier to fight someone the closer he is to them."
