Overall, Yueming lived a normal childhood. The only complaint he has is his girly name. But, growing up in the US, nobody could really tell whether his Chinese name was more feminine than masculine. He himself didn't even realize until he started learning Chinese and reading Chinese novels. It didn't affect him that much, he simply protested more against his nickname of Mingming. [break][break]
Other than that, Yueming showed an attraction towards computers, robots, and machines. So, his parents gave him a computer of his own. The twist was, it didn't have the normal Windows OS, they ran fedora (a UNIX OS), on his computer. Little Mingming, in addition to playing browser games, he started messing around with shell coding.[break][break]
It was this way that he started programming.
The concept of copyrights was not quite present in Yueming's mind as a child. His parents neither had the time nor the money to watch all the movies that Mingming wanted to. The usual course of action was a year or two after the official release of the movie, his dad would pirate it off some site and the family could enjoy it together. Of course, this changed later when Yueming finally understood that people made money off of those and made an effort to buy the ones that he considered good.[break][break]
In addition to that, his older sister also liked to pirate music off Youtube. Which was what started Yueming in his music ripping career. Buying CD's, he somehow managed to convert the data into mp3 files, which he would then share on the internet. Needless to say, most were quickly taken down, with stern warnings from website admins. However, it was fun - like a puzzle - and he kept doing it. [break][break]
Eventually, he found more people that had similar interests through the web. Working as a group, they ripped and released more and more music. With this added commitment, the group eventually found how others released their music, and came across the entire community dedicated to it. [break][break]
Through the BB community of other crackers, Yueming started getting involved in not just music ripping but also game cracking. His coding abilities came in handy and he became one of the more well known crackers and packagers in the community. Eventually, his own group started working more with applications and games, which lined right up to their entrance into college and playing many games on low budgets. And after that, many of them started getting jobs, and the cracking naturally shifted to dealing with more workplace applications. [break][break]
The group has gained reputation and members, but the addition of embers also increased security risks. Obviously nobody wants to be caught; they could face large fines and jail time. However, their releases somehow have started ending up outside the group, causing some concern and definite tension among the members.
