Lei muffled a yawn as he walked down the street. The night was relatively quiet, though he could still see a few people walking the streets despite the late hour. This specific part of the city never truly slept, not really. There was always something happening, a lot of those activities not being particularly legal ones. Lei was more than willing to ignore most of it in favour of getting home. [break][break]
Slowing to a stop at the vacant bus stop, he couldn’t hold back the sigh that rolled out of him as he collapsed down on the bench to wait. Lei wasn’t foolish enough to completely forget his surroundings though, no matter how tired he was. He glanced cautiously around himself, before reaching up to comb his fingers through his hair. Illuminated only by the yellow street light above, he idly sectioned off part of the long tresses from the rest and started to braid it. It didn’t alleviate his boredom by much, but it was at least something for his hands to do while his phone sat at dangerously low percent. [break][break]
Catching the late night bus wasn’t exactly the safest way to get home (it was safer than walking all the way there at least), but he wasn’t about to buy a car anytime soon. Not with his current salary anyway. How long had it been since he’d driven a car, anyway? … Probably too way long. Besides, the price of gas was just outrageous. He supposed he could've called a friend to pick him up, but one person he knew that would be up at a time like this was definitely not in the right condition to be driving.

Once it hit the late hours of the night, Kieran knew he needed to head home before he passed out at his desk. The day hadn’t been all too eventful; it was filled with gathering information for a small case from a few local shops, only to end up back in his office behind piles of paperwork. Paperwork was an absolute nightmare for the man, especially when he would lose himself in it for hours after everyone else had gone home to live their own lives without much of a second thought about work.[break][break]
Sometimes he swore he lived there more than his own home. When he had finally looked at his watch, he made a decision to head on home for the night; the nightmare work would still be here when morning came.[break][break]
Considering that he didn’t exactly want to pass out when he got home, he decided to take a small detour, though where he went probably wasn’t an entirely safe route. Cap pulled down slightly to shade his eyes, Kieran let out a quiet whistle was he made his way down the streets, flickering lights being his only guide. He hadn’t exactly been to this part of the city on his own, but it didn’t seem as intimidating as many of his coworkers made it out to be. Maybe it was his relaxed nature that made it easier for him to fit into this part of town. The man always made sure that he could blend in just about anywhere.[break][break]
Funny, despite owning his own car, he mostly found himself walking home some nights (like tonight for example) even though his car was parked in the lot outside of the station. It just felt nice to be out on nights like this, the fresh air helped him relax even more.[break][break]
Stretching his arms out, he let out a long sigh, stopping once he arrived at a bus stop that was occupied by a single person. “Beautiful night isn’t it?” Bringing his gaze towards the occupant of the bus stop, he couldn’t help but feel a sense of familiarity. That’s why he was surprised when the stranger spoke and didn’t come onto him. Instead, choosing to comment on what a ‘beautiful night’ it was in greeting. He turned to look at him, clumsily tugging his hands out of his hair as he hesitantly replied, “It’s pretty nice, I guess-”[break][break]
Peering up at the man, he paused at the sight that met his eyes. Now that he was no longer shrouded in the dark, Lei squinted at the familiar features illuminated by soft yellow light. It’d been so long since he’d so much as thought of his high school boyfriend, and even longer since he talked to him. He looked… He looked good. Though, Kieran always had. Lei wasn’t too surprised that, that hasn't changed over the years. [break][break]
Lei jumped slightly at the comment on his hair, and immediately his hand went to the long dark strands. His cheeks coloured and he let out a stammering, “Oh um- Yeah, I- Thanks.” And to think, this kind of attention used to be common, something he'd actually expect from Kieran. Though, that was when he was a teenager.

He could still remember what it felt like. Being so obviously enamoured despite their attempted subtlety. If anyone had been paying attention -- had been looking for the signs of brightly coloured cheeks and lingering eye contact -- they easily would've been able to see through the farce the two of them had messily constructed. While hiding their relationship from Lei’s parents had been a priority -- alone, they were able to act however they wanted. And it'd been something that felt so easy. The affection, the flirting and the compliments had all been things he'd accepted greedily and eagerly returned.

He wasn't used to it anymore. Had almost forgotten what it felt like to be genuinely complimented without lecherous eyes running over him and the subject of money to worry about. Even before that -- when he was married -- the sweet words had grown progressively hollow and empty with each passing anniversary, until they no longer felt genuine anymore.

Lei pressed his hands to his cheeks to cool them, before getting up from where he sat on the bench. He smiled faintly, “You haven’t changed much, though. I recognised you almost instantly!” He said with a short huff of laughter. Peering up at Kieran, his expression softened. “So, how’ve you been? It’s been… a really long time.”

Was it fate that brought them together tonight? It almost seemed as if some greater being had finally decided that they could see each other again; if Kieran believed in any sort of God, he would be thanking them to no end. How many years had it even been now? He missed the gentle expressing that Lei always held, the innocence that luckily seemed to stick on his features. What had he been up to all these years? What made him move here?[break][break]
Noticing the coloring of his cheeks, Kieran couldn’t help but smile fondly, his head tipping to the side just slightly as he simply observed him and his entire being. Maybe it was odd that he still felt such feeling towards the other male, but he supposed he could also call it a sort of adoration. Any person who ever found themselves with Lei were lucky; he was a genuine man, with a kind heart. He… missed being on the end of his affections sometimes… more often than he’d admit that is for sure.[break][break]
Yet, it was his turn to have the faintest of color enter his own cheeks. It wasn’t like it was a compliment, really it was true he didn’t change all too much over the years. “I… It’s a curse, isn’t it? Youth is a curse in this age, you know.” He teased lightly, his eyes focused still on Lei, enjoying being able to watch his face turn soft. Why did he always have to be so pretty, hey? [break][break]
“Far too long. It’s crazy being able to see you again.” A part of him wished he could brush any of his stray hairs back or just brush his cheek gently like he used to. Lei wasn’t his to do so to anymore though, and that was okay. “I’ve been alright, I suppose. I’m actually a detective at the police station here. Took a lot of studying and a lot of all nighters, but here we are.” Humming softly, Kieran leaned on his heels, giving him a curious look. “How about you? How have you been, Lei?”
