If there was one thing Frieda understood about children - this coming from the mind of a legal adult who still usually very much identified as a child herself - it was that there was always, no matter what, one way to win them to your side. That one way? Simple: sweets.[break][break]
Of all of the children she had ever played babysitter for (although, the number of children that qualified was rather small), not a single one had been able to resist the cruel temptation of candy, regardless of whatever it was they had to do to get it. Crying? Hand them a marshmallow. Not wanting to do their chores? Promise them chocolate if they finished in the next hour. Didn't want to go to bed? Why, for that, she broke into her own precious stash of pocky. It helped that the brunette had a personal rule to never be without snacks. Helped all the more than some of the stuffier parents never even had to know she was sneaking their precious offspring sugar while they were gone.[break][break]
Crystal, fortunately, didn't appear to be the sort to get fussy or defiant. In fact, the only time Frieda had slipped a sucker her way had simply been because the little girl had been just too darned cute. It was the very sucker she indulged in now, eyes flickering between artificially colored rainbow candy and the program flashing on the screen sat before them - a cartoon the babysitter was most certainly more invested in than the elementary schooler it'd been put on to entertain. With the way things were going, she realized, they'd have to move on from television to something more engaging before long; Holly, the girl's mother, had only been gone for just shy of an hour, and they still had all night to run out their energy before bed. (Tragic. She'd wanted to see what this Steven Universe kid was going to do next episode.)[break][break]
"Hey, Crystal," she began, relucantly turning her head away from the television set. "Did you wanna pl- Eep!"[break][break]
Whatever invitation she was preparing to make was cut off by the sound of the front door opening, a sound her ears were most certainly not prepared to hear so early in the night. The student's knee-jerk reaction was to yelp, as well as scoop her very confused charge into her arms as means of protection. Protection against... what, though? An intruder? What sort of intruder waltzed right on through the front door?[break][break]
"Uh..." Frieda spoke again, still hugging Crystal to her chest - still too afraid to actually look in case it was some sort of knife-brandishing intruder. "H...hello?"

I CAN'T SLEEP

In hind-sight, maybe Holly should of... maybe found an event online or something. Her head placed in her hand as she sat alone in a bar, a place she didn't like going, with some sort of pretty pink drink that the bar tender had made her when she just asked for something that tasted sweet and girly. It was nice until she found out how over-priced it was.[break][break]
When Frieda mentioned that she would be willing to babysit, Holly decided that maybe it'd be a good idea to go ahead and get out there, make some friends. Maybe meet a romantic interest, you know, do the things most people did in college. So... she went to a bar cause that's where you meet people right? But... this wasn't entirely the kind of crowd that tickled her fancy and she never really got into drinking.[break][break]
It was only twenty minutes and Holly was in her car, driving around, trying to find another place to go. Man it kind of bummed her out... she should of thought this through. Ten minutes she resigned herself to just going home. It was kind of stupid to think she needed anyone else but Crystal and Morgan... Maybe when she got home she'd call them. The thought cheered her up a little bit, and she turned the car home.[break][break]
When she walked in she heard Frieda nervously say Hello, poking her head in she opened her mouth to reply before finding herself giggling softly. She was glad that she was so ready to defend her daughter, oh that was wonderful. Holly then looked over Frieda.. she liked the girl. Of course she was just her tutor.. and now she was her babysitter. But.. maybe she'd be willing?[break][break]
"Sorry, nothing was really going on so I came back early." She walked over and placed her purse down on the dinner table. "But uh, if you don't have anything else to do, wanna stay and hang out for a little bit? We could pull out a board game and play with Crystal if you want, so I still have reason to pay you."[break][break]
Walking over, she gave Crystal a bit of a head pat who was excitedly looking at her mom with big happy eyes. She felt a little silly asking Frieda to do something, but really.. Holly would be really disappointed being completely alone that night. Would feel like the test was a complete failure.

Her terror was met with laughter, but not the maniacal sort that spelled the introduction of some terrible arch fiend. “Laughter” may not have even been the right word to use, so much as “giggling”, joyful little chuckles that sounded far too familiar – both in that they sounded familiar to Frieda's ears, and in that they were the sort of thing rarely given from one stranger to another – to be an offering from an intruder. No sane intruder, anyway. Still, it gave her the courage to release Crystal from her near-suffocating grasp (although, to the girl's credit, she'd complained neither during nor after what could have almost been a choke-hold) and poke her head over to see just who'd stepped in. Holiday herself, apparently. Woman of the house. Mother of the child she'd accidentally been smothering – with good intention! The one who wasn't supposed to be back for quite some time. It wasn't necessarily that she was upset by the revelation, particularly when the only other alternatives were being met with a robber at best or an ax murderer at worst, but it did beg the question of why.[break][break]

It was the college student's turn to laugh, largely at her own stupidity, and then the girl beside her, caught up in the infection of chuckling that seemed to have swept quite nicely through the room. She knew, of course, how it felt to go out with the intention of doing something, anything, only to realize that there simply wasn't anything to do. Holly probably had friends to make that a little easier, though, whereas she boasted none. Maybe they were all busy? “But, uh, if you don't have anything else to do, wanna stay and hang out for a little bit?” 'Not having anything else to do' was a very... strong way of putting it. In fact, she was fairly certain she had a paper due that very night that she'd neglected to start out of a lack of motivation and further pushed aside at the prospect of earning some extra bucks. Now that she wasn't getting paid, though (why would she be, when she'd only been around for an hour at most?), getting a decent grade was starting to take priority in her mind, in that panicky way it tended to when deadlines were afoot. “Well... uh...” she began, unsure of how, exactly, to break even more bad news to someone whose night of fun had been tragically cut short. Before she could, however, Holly continued: “We could pull out a board game and play with Crystal, if you want, so I still have reason to pay you.”[break][break]
Board games with people to actually play with? And she was getting paid? Forget the paper – board game night was a go.[break][break]
“Really? I mean – Yes! If you want me around, I mean, I... Wow, it's been a long time since I actually got to sit down and play something.” Turning her gaze to her (former?) charge, who wasn't even bothering to look at her in favor of her mother, she asked, “Sound good to you, Crystal? Geez, you already look excited.” Another flick of the gaze, this time back to Holly – “Um, you guys got Mouse Trap?”

Holly was a little nervous when there wasn't an excited response from her. Of course what college kid wants to hang out with their tutor playing games with a child? She felt her face flush red a little bit from embarrassment. Just as she was about to come up with some excuse, Frieda excitedly accepted her invitation. Oh. Oh okay, wonderful![break][break]
At the mention of Mouse Trap, a very confused Crystal excitedly ran to the closet and pulled the board game. "Yes Yes!!" she was practically jumping for joy. Though, the problem with mouse trap is if you didn't run the mouse trap every turn after it was built, Crystal would randomly pull it. Though, that wasn't the worst thing.[break][break]
Still Holly laughed "We sure do." before clearing a few things off the table. It wasn't a huge table.. after all Holly didn't have many guests. But it was big enough for three or four people, so she moved things out of the way and Crystal sat down across from her mom before placing it down and opening up the box.[break][break]

Mouse Trap, as far as Frieda was concerned, was the pinnacle of boards games, because while others could claim three-dimensional status, none could do so with the raw bombacity of a game about collecting cheese and avoiding the titular monstrous contraption. She had, of course, only played it once that she could remember: Her father had painstakingly set the whole thing, and had to real her in to make sure she was actually playing by the rules rather than having her little mouse avatar climb along the rubber bands. When he was gone, no matter how much she begged, Lorelei would not play with her. Not out of malice – just because she could never figure out how to set it up the way he had. And when he was gone, well, she never even thought to ask. By now, she couldn't even remember how it was played, and only had vague memories of how the finished display was meant to look; that didn't change the objective fact, however, that no game stood superior to it on a tabletop.[break][break] “ Dibs on red!” Frieda called the moment Holly asked, making a mad grab for the little crimson figure the moment the lid had been popped off and the box's contents exposed. Or – had Holly wanted red? She didn't figure she'd be the sort to get hung up on colors ( teachers were so infinitely wise and patient, it sometimes hurt just to think about), but maybe, with a nervous giggle, just in case: “ Uuuuuuunless that's what you were going for.” Either way, she reached over to grab Crystal's own desired rodent of choice, dropping it in the little girl's hands with a toothy grin. “ Ready to eat a buncha cheese? I bet I can eat more than you~!”[break][break] The playing board was unfolded on the little table, the yellow cardboard triangles divided out accordingly, and the college student came to a sudden realization. Her father had always set up the “trap” in advance, but supposedly that hadn't been in the rules? How did this game even work, anyway? “ Want help setting up the trap?” she offered, wondering if she'd sound stupid if she asked outright when that was done, but realizing in hindsight that she'd probably sound even more stupid offering to help well before its time.
