Worth in the world was determined by two key facts: possession of wealth and usefulness in a society supersaturated with any number of nameless citizens who could, theoretically, just as easily take another's place without thought or care. Few possessed both on a wide scale, although those with the former liked to believe they held more of the latter; across the “common people”, even the poor could console themselves with the knowledge that they mattered in making even their smallest pillars of community and civilization run. In the revolution, it was told, even the smallest of cogs would move the largest of gears in time – every contribution would ultimately make it possible to change the world like no one had before. Any little bit helped, so long as you were brave enough to pull the trigger, barrel rested against your own head.[break][break]

And yet, as with most everything else she had encountered, Karva found herself feeling quite helpless, useless, when it came to the already minimal work she was asked to do for the enigmatic Doctor X. Leave it to her to somehow fail to complete even the smallest of duties. There was only so much a woman as herself (sworn to pacifism, refusing to ever raise her hand to strike) could do in the name of violent upheaval, and so the task of medic had fallen on her incapable shoulders, but even the other medics, most of whom had just as little formal training as herself seemed to have made strides many leagues greater than her own, and in only a fraction of the time. Anyone else may have thought that her self-criticism was unnecessary; revolutionists still got patched up without her, and her dedication to the cause was but a ripple compared to the tidal wave that some of the more... passionate members had. But an excuse for her brain to battle and belittle herself was an excuse it would take. So long as she did nothing, she would feel useless. So long as she felt useless, she would berate herself into the dust.[break][break]

The only solution, then, was to study and work until she could do something – and the only way to go about that was to seek outside help.[break][break]

It was almost always easy to tell the formal, school-taught medics from those who had been taught from within the revolution. Operation-taught methods were effective enough, cheap and effective to boot, but they often lacked the polish that came with a degree, or at least the classes that would have led up to it. There were always the rumors that bubbled around the mostly young crowds of revolutionaries, as well, to confirm any suspicions (or confirm them as much as any rumor could), and it was through these that Karva came to know of Adrian. Well, Adrian and a few others, but none more approachable than the first. An actual nurse outside of her work atop the coffee shop, and one who didn't look like she could and very potentially would snap the blonde right down the middle like a twig if she looked at her wrong (which she almost certainly would, although not necessarily by choice); if she could only muster the courage to ask, there would be few better teachers among the rest.[break][break]

It had taken every scrap, then, to make it to the hideout, and a great deal of fortune on top that she was, in fact, there. Before that courage ran out, Karva, iron-faced, heavy-tongued, looks that could kill, called out, “Adrian... right? I want to talk to you.”

Adrian wouldn’t say she was fearless by any means, but she would have said that she definitely didn’t scare like most would— if only from experience alone. Though quiet as she was about her past she shared if with anyone who was interested enough to ask. The things she’d done and seen— the things she let slide because of who had done them (Quin, her chest squeezes at the thought) or perhaps after that chapter in her life when they had gone different ways. When her messages were left unread and she waited for him to visit but he never did— until he wasn’t even around to glance at. [break] [break]

Things she’d done to make ends meet during the brutal holiday winters on the streets of New York, things she allowed people to do and touch on her. Requests that weren’t so much requests as they were demands and the prick of a needle against her flesh for the first time (the thought still brings a shiver down her spine and chills her insides). [break] [break]

Adrian was far from someone who was afraid of things instead she was woefully optimistic to a fault and forgiving when she shouldn’t be. Second, third, fourth— the list of times she’d forgive went on until someone else intervened and told her enough because after the sixtieth time they were unlikely to change (but what if they did?)[break] [break]

Familiar with the revolution (she was apart of it, after all) and the coffee shop that sat atop of one of its, no doubt, numerous locations and hideouts throughout Seattle and maybe then some. She typically didn’t visit here often, anxiety welled up in her stomach at the thought of things that went on below. Of the bloody knuckles she went back to bandaging on Quin. But she was at times, required to be here if only for appearance sake and have information discreetly given to her. (People were wounded and sometimes the clinic was out of the question, they stationed her at some other discreet buildings instead some nights).[break] [break]

Today was one of those days but it was much more lighthearted than other visits and she’d taken to a small box of chocolate milk. Happily chatting a revolutionists ear off as they (likely) strained to keep up or even give their input on the topic at hand. So when her name was called and the attention of her companion was drawn to the source and their face paled Adrian could say that she was fearful then. Maybe she’d done something wrong? Perhaps a name slip she didn’t catch? Like a child caught doing something bad she slowly turned her head, a look of guilt plastered to her face as she caught sight of the woman who’d requested her. [break] [break]

Maybe the box of chocolate milk was hers? Had she ordered the same thing and Adrian had just assumed that the one placed on the counter was hers when it in fact, belonged to the steel-faced, angry-eyed woman who’d called her out. [break] [break]

Sheepishly pulling the straw away from her mouth and nudging the box back onto the table she debated for a moment if she should just pay for another and hand it to the woman or— but there wasn’t much time to think over possibilities. Instead she slunk from her seat, guilty faced like a child ready to be scolded with a ruler to her hand for disobedience, toward the woman. [break] [break]

“Did I take your chocolate milk? I’ll pay for another for you!” She would, it was only right!

The man's reaction (the one she hadn't seen before she'd entered, and the one she certainly hadn't seen before she'd spoke) was one to be expected. Many of the revolutionists fancied themselves brave, and likely were if they were willing to press barrel to brain at the threat of splattering the contents of their head out, but people both within and without didn't tend to take well toward a woman who looked as though she'd snap your arm for minimal offense, and like it or not, that was simply the sort of look Karva was forced to wear from dusk until dawn. Guilty, though – guilt was uncommon, especially when there was nothing around to look remotely guilty about. Why Adrian would look that way, of all things, was a question worth the piqued interest; the answer she shortly after got for it, however, only left more questions open still, and that was only after it failed at its duty of giving her any sort of clarity.[break][break]

“Did I take your chocolate milk?”[break][break]

Chocolate...? Oh, that was what she'd been drinking before, wasn't it? Was the nurse the sort to go around picking up any snack or drink that happened to be lying around and stake claims on it? That... didn't exactly align with the blonde's mental perception of her, but having never formally met, presumptions weren't exactly a fair metric to work off of. Still, she couldn't recall ever having chocolate milk to steal in the first place, never mind having enough attachment to any chocolate milk she'd ever owned that it would be worth going through the social torture of confronting someone about it. Before she could even begin to think of how to weave those thoughts into words, however - “I'll pay for another for you!” Oh. Now, that posed a problem untreated.[break][break]

“Don't,” she said, too sharp, too sudden, inwardly worried that the pinkette would rush off to pay for something that Karva didn't deserve without hastily-given reason not to. But that was too rude, too strong, wasn't it? Struggling to figure out how to smooth another one of her verbal messes over, or even just put her thoughts into words, she said... not at all what she meant to: “I'll pay for it myself.” Ah. Chocolate milk she didn't even want. Classic.[break][break]

It was too embarrassing to try to correct herself after the fact, though, and all credit to a mouth that seemed to work on its own, always in opposition of the woman who owned it. Instead, she focused her intense stare at the only thing in the room that wasn't a face (probably mocking her, no less), the chocolate milk on the table, and wished she could just melt through the floor like lava.
