Salty wet tears soaked his skin on their glide down his cheeks. Blind yelling echoed through out the house. Back and forth and back and forth. It was time to leave. Time to walk away and finally start his own life. [break][break] "Don't you dare walk away from me Jasper Kyle Hawkings!" No response lead to the slam of a wood door so hard there was a loud CRACK! And in any other circumstance that might have brought Jazz guilt and concern. But not this day. He cared little for anything today. [break][break] Ten minutes past and all he could do was sob pitifully. Anger, fear, and resentment flowing through body causing it to shiver from the overwhelming emotion.[break][break] His father hadn't followed him in. Good, he didn't want anymore to do with him. Breathe Jazz. Time to go to Apollo's. He stood up, dragging out two big suit cases out of his closet. He'd been hiding them there, planning for the right time to leave. Why hadn't he done so yet? Agate. His younger brother. Jazz wanted to make it work just a little bit longer, to try to connect with him even though they clearly had different opinions on life. If family was important then Jazz owed it to the kid to try.[break][break] But there was no way this was going to work anymore. This place was not safe. This family did not want him so... It no longer worked for him to be here. He began packing. Folding clothes quickly and stuffing other important things into the folds of the fabrics to keep them safe. “Don’t be like your brother.” What his parents frequently said and implied surfaced in Agate's mind. And parents knew best, right? Until now, that meant not hanging with the wrong crowd and studying hard. Agate had done well; he had the academic trophies and years of honor rolls to prove it. But nothing in all the books Agate had read told him what to do now. [break][break]
The yelling that filled the house was bad enough, but the cold silence after Jasper slammed his door scared Agate. He got up from his desk; he couldn't concentrate on his book anyway. As he passed his brother's room, he was stopped by the sound of sniffles. It couldn't be. Jasper was so stubborn, so persistent, so strong. Agate ground his teeth. Blinking against the warmth building in his own eyes, he reached for the doorknob. If his achievements or comfort would come at the price of a family member, he didn't want it. [break][break]
But he stopped, his hand millimeters away from the cool metal. What would he say? What right did he have to stop Jasper now? Agate thought of all the times he'd blown Jasper off just to read books. Part of it was due to his parents words. The other part… [break][break]
Now that Jasper was leaving, to someplace that might treat him better too, what right did Agate have to cling onto him? The sounds of packing and uneven breathing filtered through the door. Agate retracted his hand and quietly locked himself in his room.

He pulled out a book at random. Opening it, he almost thought the book had read his mind: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” The burning came back, and this time Agate's tears spilled over. Putting the book down, he sat in front of his door with his knees in his chest. In an effort to stay quiet, he bit his hand. It didn't work. Harder. Ouch, that was definitely going to bruise.

And when he heard the other door close he knew it had been Agate. He stopped packing and sighed. Taking a moment to calm his own emotional turmoil. Not completely, but at least shoving the storm down so that he could no longer feel it. Even if it wasn't getting rid of the pain altogether.[break][break] Agate had never been very strong or independent. Their parents were dominant in the house and Agate followed their dominance while Jazz worked against it. Which... Didn't make him a very strong person either. Jazz... Jazz was a black sheep. Follow the crowd and you'll be alright. The problem was, the crowd that he tended to follow were dangerous on his own psyche. It wasn't until Middle school when Hans had pushed him out of that crowd that he had been apart of, that he stopped allowing himself to be a punching bag for others. It was then that he found Apollo. Agate, on the other hand, followed the alpha of the house, their father. Their ungrateful, over zealous, judgemental, unloving father. But of course Agate is loved, because the child follows through with their every whim. But he was just late in seeing the truth yet.[break][break] Jazz took a breath and opened a crack in his door tentatively. No sign of his parents. So he slipped out of his room and walked over to his younger brother's door quietly. He rung his wrists in thought as he wondered what to say. He knew Agate ignored him. Knew the boy was brainwashed into believing lies. Their parents had turned Agate against him. He took a shaky breath, and instead of knocking he sat on the floor and put his back against his brother's door.[break][break] The prospect of never seeing his brother again was an intense one that, like a virus, overwhelmed and ate at his mind. The pain and tears returned as he sat as close as he could get to the only person he considered family blood and yet the door between them separated their lives, beliefs, and understanding of the world. Despite coming from the same world, same family, same blood, and while Jazz had to also admit that they were more similar than anyone would like to speak out about, they were heading in two different directions.[break][break] What could he say? What could he possibly say that wouldn't taint the perfect little child their parents worked so hard to create? And yet, what could he say that was so profound that it would make Agate think? Agate took deep breaths to calm himself. After the tears stopped, he was left with teeth marks in his hands and hitching breathing that wouldn’t stop. He looked up and dried his eyes. At the same time, a gust of wind moved the clouds. Sunlight escaped just so; it came in through his window and landed on his desk. The light bounced off a picture frame and made him squint. Agate got up and retrieved the object. Sitting back down in front of the door, he studied the faces in the picture.[break][break]
Two little boys, one a good bit older and holding onto the younger one, who was smiling and waving a flower. What he wouldn’t give to go back. “Jasper...” He whispered. “Don’t go.” Only the last syllable went up, as if he was asking a question. But again, Agate realized that time had passed and gone. His brother was somewhere ahead of him, and Agate would have to run and catch up. [break][break]
Hearing a bump on the door, Agate realized his brother must be outside. Standing up, he turned to face the door and almost opened it. But again, he hesitated. If he opened the door, would he be able to let Jasper go? Would he even be able to face Jasper? To talk without looking away and without pushing Jasper away? Agate couldn’t guarantee anything. So, he opted to lean his forehead against the door, picture held tightly in one hand and the doorknob in the other. [break][break]
“Jasper?” Agate started, but his voice cracked. He cleared his throat. “It’s ok if you go… You should probably leave before Dad gets over his anger and tries to find you though.” In this way, they truly were similar. Agate, his brother, and his father all had a habit of finding alone time whenever they were upset. He laughed bitterly. Ironic that the trait they all had was staying away from each other. “Jasper - Brother, I’m sorry.” Agate turned the doorknob; the door unlocked. But he let go without opening the door, as if asking Jasper to make the decision.

The distress was obvious despite the words and his heart almost drown at what he said. He almost wished Agate had asked him- no told him- to stay. So often he would try to get Agate to go to lunch or watch movies and the like, but they didn't because they boy was studying or too busy ignoring him. He remembered one time when they went to go have lunch together and after they got back Jazz heard a conversation the younger boy had with their father who in turn scolded him for spending time with Jazz. [break][break] He swallowed. It was best not to continue relations with him. At least while he was still under the thumb of their father. There was a hole in his heart that would always belong to his younger brother. And until he stepped out of their father's shadow, Jazz would wait patiently for him. [break][break] A click came from the door and almost instantly Jasper stood up and opened the door. His arms were around Agate the moment he stepped into his room. "No... Don't ever say sorry again. Be yourself. Don't ever let anyone or anything hold you back." tears streamed down his cheeks like acid rain. He held his precious brother in a hug so tight he wondered if he could ever let go. "I love you brother. Despite my anger and bitterness and everything else related, I love you and that will never change. The door opened so fast that Agate instinctively took a step back. But that didn't matter; Jasper hugged him all the same. “Let go…” Agate quietly complained, but his body language said otherwise. He returned the hug with a ferocity, as if hanging on for dear life. Only Agate's unfamiliarity with returning hugs led him to squeeze harder than he meant to. He buried his face into Jasper's chest and struggled to stem his flow of tears. [break][break]
“Sorry, sorry.” He thought in his head and probably whispered out loud. Agate's ungrateful little soul didn't deserve a brother like this. One day, he'll make it up to Jasper. One day, he'll make it up to Jasper. One day… one day he'd find himself.[break][break]
But for now, he didn't want to let go. “I - I love you too.” When Jasper stepped back and looked into his eyes, Agate clung onto the hem of Jasper's shirt. Why, oh why hadn't he done this earlier? If he had, would things have turned out better? Perhaps this mess -. Agate didn't finish that thought. [break][break]
Eyes watering and now hiccupping, Agate looked up at his brother. He dried his eyes on his sleeve. He let go of Jasper's shirt. He took Jasper's hand and gave it a small squeeze. And he forced himself to smile. Don't go. But only the last word made it out of his mouth. “Go.” He let go of Jasper's hand. “I'll be okay.” He paused. “I'll make sure to come see you every once in a while.” What more could he do?

Lies. Lies But his tears stayed the same, his demeanor never changed. Pain was still the dominant emotion he felt, but now it was as if his younger brother had just ripped the rest of his heart out with one simple word. "Of course." Was all he could say in response to his brother's insistence he would visit. But his eyes glassed over and he couldn't stop their hands from releasing each other. And what else could he do now but follow the order that Agate gave to him. [break][break] Of course. Agate was the perfect child here. Jasper only got in the way. He was a stain on their family name and almost wondered if he should change his last name officially. But he knew he would never have the heart to do so.[break][break] Once more he lifted his hand to... do... something, he didn't really know what, something bitter? something affectionate? but it quickly went back down and Jasper nodded. It was time to go then. There wasn't much more he could do here. But... He'd leave his guitar. Maybe Agate couldn't play it, but hopefully the kid would keep it? He didn't know... But he felt he had to do something. "I'll see you soon then, brother." He said softly, and gave the boy a kiss on the forehead as he stood up to leave. And when he left, he didn't look back. You were supposed to ask me to stay! But... why would he want Jasper to stay?[break][break] He finished packing up quickly, leaving his beautiful precious guitar on the incredibly messy bed. The room itself was a disaster. He didn't care. They would have to clean up his mess after he left. They fucking deserved everything he dished out for them. Which admittedly wasn't all that much. As he was rolling his bags out the door he heard his father's door open and shut, "Where do you think your--" He shut the door in the middle of his father's sentence and quickly shoved his things into the back seat of his own chevy and got into the drivers seat just as his father came out of the house and stomped over screaming at him to get out of the car. No fucking way.[break][break] A bang on his window and Jazz quickly stepped on the gas, 0-30 in seconds and down the road he went. By the time his parents would have gotten into their own car and come after him, he was long gone. Agate wanted nothing more than to tell Jasper to stay. The kiss on his forehead almost made him tear up again. But no, he couldn’t. Agate had to make sure Jazz didn’t regret his decision. He reached up and touched the spot Jazz had kissed. Warm. Agate didn’t know if the warmth was his hand, his brother’s lips, or his forehead. He stood still as his brother pulled away. All too soon, Jazz was leaving. Agate reached a hand out, but missed the back of his shirt. Fate, it must have been. [break][break]
Agate sat down again, his face in his hands. The tears didn’t come. Why was that? Agate almost wanted to laugh. From downstairs, he could hear the yelling. Agate pulled himself off the ground and shut the door. As soon as he did that, he went to the window. He put his head against the cool glass. [break][break]
Maybe it was all a joke, a stupid nightmare. Any moment now, Jazz would pop up again, probably out of some closet or through a window, with his ridiculous smile. Agate was drawn back to reality by the sound of the car’s engine. He opened the window, letting in the cold air and wind while he watched his brother drive away. What had he expected? That Jasper might turn around once more and wave goodbye? Agate watched until Jazz’s car was out of sight, his father’s car lagging far behind. He turned around. The wind had blown his papers everywhere. The wardrobe’s contents were scattered over the floor. The bed was messy. Agate sighed. He leaned over to make the bed, but his eyes widened when he finally caught sight of what his brother left him. His precious guitar. No way. Jazz, giving up his guitar? This was definitely a dream. Kneeling next to his bed, Agate broke down sobbing. [break][break]
In the years to come, Agate would visit infrequently. Each time staying a little shorter and waiting a little longer to visit again. Eventually, he stopped visiting altogether. It made him feel guilty. He should never have told Jazz to go. But every now and then, he’d pluck a couple chords on the guitar - he never did learn how to play. It reminds him of a dream in days gone by.
