[attr="class","omapponebio1"]
No matter what, you're always the last to do anything. Whether it's running, bike riding, achieving first place or even something as simple as drawing it's almost certain that one of the others did it first. Such was your life as the youngest of the Candor children, but none of your older siblings left you alone about it. [break][break]
"Hey Annie, why dont'cha dye your hair like the orphan."[break][break]
"I mean you do the same stuff right?"[break][break]
"Aw c'mon little sis. It's just a little fun."[break][break]
"But it's not fun... for me..."[break][break]
They never listened after that. Ever.[break][break]
[break][break]
Under the cover of night you hide beneath the sheets, torch clenched between her teeth being the only source of light. Instead of the darkness outside the cover thrown over your head, your eyes are filled with the light from the books in front of you. Stories of incredible people blessed with impossible powers but above all dedicate their lives to helping others. If only you could live in a world like that - your story would make an entertaining origin.[break][break]
There was a clatter from outside and the light is extinguished in a second. Your eyes clench closed, fearing the result if someone catches you up at this hour. After a few seconds, you peek through to see your eldest sibling crying in the corner. It isn't your problem, that's what you told yourself ever since that fateful night. This isn't something you have to worry about. After all, that person's problem is theirs, not yours.[break][break]
Yet the words you heard that night still haunt your ears every time you try to sleep. Ones that changed nothing in your life, but in that person's it changed everything. Sometimes you imagine yourself in that position, wondering how you would react. Even now you can't imagine it.[break][break]
"Why did you LEAVE we were meant to do this TOGETHER."[break][break]
[break][break]
You always study alone. Nobody approached you at any time because your family had always left you by yourself - it became natural. Even when you were friendly, upbeat, kind and welcoming people kept their distance. In some ways, it was easier. If someone was hurt then it wasn't your fault. That was... someone else's problem... yes... it was...[break][break]
But it was so hard to stay away. Even when you tried, it felt like a river pulling you in the opposite direction back to where the other person was struggling. It was in your nature to help and it took far too many years to realize. The day you did became one of the most important days of your life.[break][break]
Crystal clear you can remember the sun shining down, another day at school. It was time to leave so that was what you did - what happened every single day. From afar you could see someone being pushed around, called names, forced to do things so their secrets would remain so. Each day you passed the same scene telling yourself 'at least it wasn't me'. But one day, you saw that same scenario play out this time remaining to watch. [break][break]
Enough was enough.[break][break]
That was the first day you got suspension. The first time anyone in the Candor family had gotten a suspension but not something you would regret. It was for a violent act on another student - at sixteen years old you had knocked out one of the most feared students of the school with nothing but a bruised knuckle. Told them that if you heard that they did something like this again, you wouldn't hesitate. Yes, you were less inclined to violence when it involved yourself but toward others? No. Enough was enough.[break][break]
That day, Annie Candor stopped being a passerby and became a Superhero.[break][break]
[break][break]
Your phone vibrated in your pocket - an unexpected call. The eldest of the family never called your. Who would call their pathetic little sister that was the only one who got detention? No one in their right mind. Especially from your family. Of course you recognized the number, you had memorized all your sibling's numbers when they had once told you but never being brave enough to call. One shaky breath and you answered. But without even breathing out a word of greeting-[break][break]
"Annie. Annie help me please I'm sc-"[break][break]
A crash from the other end of the line, but you were already moving. There was no direction you knew of - you didn't know where that person was nor where they had decided to live. But dear god if you weren't going to find out.[break][break]
"Stay calm. Where are you."[break][break]
"I-I'm at home. The address is-"[break][break]
"Keep on the line. I promise, I'm going to be there soon."[break][break]
Everything felt like it was moving in reverse. Your feet should move faster, you graduated at the top of your intake while you were in the training academy. Best in the physical field you made sure because a police officer had to get to the location as quickly as possible. Now was the first time that your sibling had ever tried to ask you for help and you couldn't even get there fast enough. [break][break]
"Anyone on duty this is Officer Candor I've got a call the address is-"[break][break]
You were the first to arrive but that didn't stop you. Fists banged against the door with no answer, but you were certain that your sibling was in there. They were in danger. Just as the officers pulled up you were given a nod and smashed through the front door.[break][break]
This was the day you saved your sibling. It was the day you saved the friendship that never existed in the first place.[break][break]
[break][break]
Once, you dreamed of being a superhero. Saving the world with special powers where everyone knew your superhero identity and no one knew of Annie Candor. In a way you still dream of that, but now you live the reality. This world is dark and gritty, not everything goes the way we want it to. But what there is would always be worth fighting for. Maybe you didn't have powers, but you were a real-life superhero.[break][break]
Sergeant Annie Candor of the Seattle Police. A hero who would never turn her back on someone needing help.
