In the elder days of Art,[break]
Builders wrought with greatest care[break]
Each minute and unseen part;[break]
For the Gods see everywhere.[break][break]
Let us do our work as well,[break]
Both the unseen and the seen;[break]
Make the house, where Gods may dwell,[break]
Beautiful, entire, and clean.[break][break]
Else our lives are incomplete,[break]
Standing in these walls of Time,[break]
Broken stairways, where the feet[break]
Stumble as they seek to climb.[break][break]
Build to-day, then, strong and sure,[break]
With a firm and ample base;[break]
And ascending and secure[break]
Shall to-morrow find its place.[break][break]
Thus alone can we attain[break]
To those turrets, where the eye[break]
Sees the world as one vast plain,[break]
And one boundless reach of sky. [break]

"Don't ever forget, you're mommy's girl." Giggles followed.[break][break]
"How could I? I see you every day! Silly mommy." The 7 year old shook her head, looking back down at her origami flower. It's not like she could forget even if she wanted to. After putting in finishing touches, the flower roughly resembled a fish. She turned back to her mother and beckoned. Obligingly, her mother leaned over. MingYi knit her eyebrows in concentration. Delicately, she balanced the flower behind her mother's ear. Slowly, she withdrew her hand. One, two, three... It stayed! A smile lighting up her face, she laughed and clapped her hands.[break][break]
"Mommy looks pretty now!" She ran off to find her older brother, all thoughts of her mother's request gone.[break][break]
"You will not take my children!" MingYi peeked out her door. She didn't like when the strange lady visited. The tall, Strange Lady with the too tight bun and never-ending questions. She hated that syrupy sweet way the lady said her name - and that she used her entire first name. "Mingyi, your mom is quite busy isn't she?" No. "MingYi, you don't get to go outside much do you?" No. "MingYi, have you ever thought about living somewhere else?" No. Just no. But today was different. The Strange Lady didn't talk to MingMing. Instead, the hushed conversation between adults had somehow erupted to a shouting match. [break][break]
"Little kids should stay in their room and read their books." A hand gently pushed her head back into her own room. She looked up. Her older brother gently smiled down on her. "Go on." With that, he shut her door. MingYi could only listen as her brother's footsteps traveled through the hallway and down the stairs. Shortly after, his voice joined the debate in the kitchen. MingYi opened her fairy-tale book and drowned out the voices by reading aloud. [break][break]
"It's for your own good." [break][break]
What good? MingYi didn't understand. None of her new siblings read to her like her brother did. Her new Mommy didn't even know how to use the inhaler! At least they were still in the same state; she could see her brother some weekends. It took some getting used to, but eventually life fell into a new equilibrium. MingYi stayed in her room most days, leaving only to eat and visit the study. While her new siblings played tag in the grass and hide and seek in the flower garden, Mingyi's asthma kept her inside with novels and folklore.[break][break]
Yet, all good things must come to an end. "I don't want to move!" Her first large-scale temper tantrum didn't go over well. "Be reasonable; your father just found a new job. He's also found a bigger house up in Washington. Wouldn't you like a larger house too?" Her nails dug into her palms as angry tears threatened to fall. "I don't care! He's not my father! I don't need a father anyway! We were doing just fine without one before!" Smack! MingYi stumbled back. She brought her hand up to her face. Comprehension dawned on her foster mother's face as she reached out to MingYi. MingYi jumped back, afraid of getting hit again. "I hate you!" Turning around, she made a quick escape up the stairs. [break][break]
Moving day came and went. Her thoughts wandered back to her brother. MingYi could only hope her brother didn't throw away the origami rose she had given him. Something to remember her by. The only thing she had left from her family was a fading picture of the three of them. She made a promise to herself. One day, no matter how long it took, she'd find her older brother again.[break][break]
Perhaps it was her own fault. She'd never given them much of a chance. As time flew by, MingYi found herself more and more estranged from her foster siblings. But perhaps it was her foster parent's doing. Since that day, MingYi talked less and less, opting to wait and watch instead. It became clear that her foster parent's weren't very fond of her. Sure, it was nowhere near abuse or neglect, but MingYi supposed an adopted child could never compare to one's own flesh and blood. [break][break]
And so, MingYi turned to others. This too, didn't come easy. With people, MingYi found herself constantly evaluating their body language. A small gesture here, a way of standing there. People never seemed comfortable around her, nor did they want to talk to her. At least, that's how it appeared in her eyes. So, she left them alone. But soon enough, she found the mask of anonymity online.[break][break]
"You're adopted? Me too!"[break]
"Not adopted over here, but might as well be lol"[break]
...[break]
"Hey, you know what we should do?"[break]
"What?"[break][break]
"Let's give them hell."
