Hand guns, snipers, semi-automatics; put it in his hands, hear him make his threats, and watch them be carried out to the letter in the moments that were to follow. Perhaps that was the root of his overconfidence, something bred from the roots of his work that had blossomed out and ovegrown into what few other faucets he had in his life. When a person held a firearm in their hands – a child, an adult, a woman, a man, even a heroin addict with the intelligence of a fourth grader – it put them in a position of control, and as a professional hitman, it was no wonder that he was use to that control, and very little else.[break][break] When it came to a fist fight, however, Nikki was a man who tended to bite off more than he could chew. It was easy, too easy, to spit poison at whoever was unfortunate to listen to it; easier to threaten and tempt a confrontation; easier still to pretend that he wouldn't cry at the first punch thrown; easiest of all to let the tears flow when that very punch connected. Work kept him busy enough that he usually hadn't the time to go out and beg trouble to break him in two with a set of brass knuckles, hadn't been sent to the hospital since he was still an idiot child barely staying under his parents' roof, but tonight was the night when he revisited past-times of old. Namely, getting his ass handed to him by thugs who'd kill to save face. The “who”s and the “why”s were lost to the foggy haze of a rapidly fading high. He was probably lucky the effects of his needle decided to leave when they did; if he were any less lucid, he wasn't sure he would have even bothered to try to stitch himself up, much less have been able to carry through the motions.[break][break] ( X wasn't going to be very happy about this in the morning.)[break][break] Bars were, in theory, the ideal place for these bloody walks of shame. Most patrons were too drunk to notice whoever it was that walked in the door, blurry-visioned enough to mistake the stain of red as a fashion statement and the reek of blood as the usual stench of a room packed full of sweat and booze and vomit. Bars, of course, were claustrophobic. There was no guarantee he'd find room to sew up the places where his skin had been split, nor did he care to subject himself to a crowd of even half the size of the typical busy pub. A seedy diner, then, was not the ideal second pick, but when blood-loss already had him seeing double vision ( or maybe that was still credit to the drug in his veins?), well – it would simply have to do. He could only hope that whoever was inside wasn't up for being nosy so late into the evening hours.[break][break] Beneath the glow of artificial light, the reality of his beating became clear: his hands were definitely soaked, and his “discreet” shuffle from the doorway to the most secluded corner left a trail of blood in its wake. “ Shit,” the hitman cursed under his breath, fresh tears trailing down now-familiar tracks as he pressed harder against the worst of his cuts. Would the first aid kit be enough?[break][break] No – it had to be. Calling for a medic here would only draw attention... assuming he hadn't drawn it to himself already. Joan yawned nosily as she turned to look at the clock on the wall. It was only halfway through her shift and she was already tired. She’d even slept through the day to try and counteract this problem. Obviously it hadn’t worked. Why did she keep taking night shifts again? Oh yeah, the money. She was starting to question whether it was really worth it though. Especially when she had to deal with the interesting type of crowd that came to the diner at this time of night. Drunks going for a midnight meal were the usual patrons, though seeing a junkie or a homeless person pass through were just as likely a sight to see. She heard the sound of the door opening, but didn’t pay it too much mind. She’d get to serving them in just a moment. But then she saw the red out of the corner of her eye. Was that… was that fucking blood? Joan had to take a moment to fully comprehend what she was seeing. Yeah, that was blood and it belonged to a pretty badly beaten individual.

“Jesus Christ.” The words left her mouth without her permission, though they were thankfully spoken quietly under her breath. She was definitely awake now. “What the fuck?” Okay, that time she wasn’t so quiet. This experience would certainly make for an interesting story to tell. She knew that the diner she worked at was as far from a high end restaurant as one could get, and she’d seen her fair share of weird shit walk through that door late at night, but this was definitely a rarity. For a moment, she didn’t know quite what to do.

He looked like he was in desperate need of help. Or medical attention. Preferably both. Why he was in some random diner instead of at the hospital was definitely concerning. Unless he didn’t want to draw unnecessary attention to himself. Though why exactly he chose to drag himself into the diner and leave puddles of blood all over the ground if was the case, she didn’t know. But the fact remained; this guy was pretty fucked up and he needed help. Whether he was involved in some serious shit or just some dude who’d just encountered a little bad luck walking around the city at night, it didn’t matter. What mattered is that he was dripping blood everywhere and she knew there was a first aid kit in the back.

As she walked over to the bloodied man, she carefully made sure to step over the spots of red he’d left all over the floor until she finally came to stand in front of him. The guy made for a pretty pitiful sight. “Hey, kid. You want me to call an ambulance?” Joan offered, before rethinking her strategy. The brunette hesitated before reaching out her hand, the movement aborted and unsure. She didn’t touch him, too wary of what he’d do if she did. She wasn’t sure if he’d like to be touched, especially in the current state he was in. Joan didn’t want to risk him lashing out. “… Or I can help patch you up, if that isn’t an option.”

[attr="class","beyonddarkpostbulk1"] [attr="class","beyonddarkpostimgg"] When his entrance heralded no more sound than the swing of the door and the chime it let out, Nikki was foolish enough to believe that maybe, just this once, fortune had deigned to smile on him and no one had so much as bothered to look. That was how it went with graveyard shifts and their unfortunate workers, correct? So brain dead tired that even a man in a trenchcoat splashing blood all over the place seemed rational enough. It wasn't until he heard the distinctive cry of “ what the fuck” that he remembered that his luck was never that accommodating; or, more likely, that even if his entrance went overlooked entirely, the trail he'd left literally leading straight to him was bound to catch someone's attention eventually. Part of him begged a god he knew was not listening to give him just a bit more time. The rest of him knew that all the time in the world couldn't help him now.[break][break] By the time the waitress made her way over, tiptoeing over crimson splatter as if they were live mines protruding from the floor, his kit was already open at the table – tragically, looking rather sparce, as far as its contents went. There'd been the question of whether or not he could treat himself with it in its entirety. Without even that, he was truly and rightfully screwed.[break][break] “ Hey, kid. You want me to call an ambulance?”[break][break] Well, no, that wasn't right. He wasn't officially screwed until she made good on that offer. Tonight, the hitman had done nothing particularly unlawful ( what a life one must lead to brush euphoria's pump under the rug as 'legal enough'), but he didn't trust himself in the hands of the law for any reason at all. For one, he had “public urination” on his permanent record now. For another, he knew he was absolute piss at lying, and if there was even a chance of his connections to an underground revolution being brought to light, he had to snuff it out with every ounce of effort he could. It was so tempting to bite out a comment on how he wasn't a kid, how far he was from one, but he didn't supposed he'd make a very convincing argument as he snuffled and whimpered in pain; just tonight, she won this round.[break][break] Perhaps it was better he kept his mouth shut. Maybe she wouldn't have backtracked as she did if he'd tried to pick a fight. “ ... Or I can help patch you up, if that isn't an option.”[break][break] “ This h-happen to you a lot?” he managed to ask, sarcastic to a point even with Death hazy on the horizon. Most anyone else would have dropped down and called 9-1-1 immediately; he could only wonder what she'd seen in this diner that forgoing an ambulance entirely was something she even considered. “ N-no doctors, I can't – I can't -” Get the words out, for one thing. He shuttered and he shook, spilling more red across the unfortunate chair carrying his weight. “ Fuck. Fuck. I don't – I don't have enough here.” For emphasis, his own first aid kit skittered across the table as he shoved it in frustration, gasping as the movement pulled as sensitive and torn skin, growing all the more frustrating that he couldn't even be frustrated without repercussion now. “ God, just kill me quick'n' g-get it over with.” [attr="class","beyonddarkpostleft3"]

She was going to regret even talking to this guy, wasn’t she? The brunette looked down at the pathetic excuse for a medical kit he had on the diner table with barely concealed exhaustion. She was suddenly very, very tired. And the amount of attitude she was getting from a guy on death’s door wasn’t helping.

“Not really, and it’s not something I’d like to make a habit out of.” Joan had been successful at keeping her nose out of people’s business so far, but her good luck was bound to come to an end eventually. She was genuinely surprised that it’d taken her this long to come across a situation like this. Sure, she’d seen her fair share of bullshit through the years working at this crappy diner –grabby customers, drunken fights, people who were on seemingly every illegal substance -- she’d seen a lot. But at most all she’d ever had to do was call the cops and she’d be done with it.

God, he was starting to freak out which in turn was making her freak out. The amount of red on the floor was only increasing and she sucked in a deep breath as she attempted to steel her nerves. “Okay, okay.” She jumped harshly when he pushed the horrible first aid kit, scattering its contents over the table and onto the floor. It was an incredibly childish action, and she had thought she was over putting up with this kind of bullshit when she moved to Seattle. Obviously, she’d been wrong. That was all it took to light a match to her temper. She could feel her teeth grind together as she clenched her hands into fists.

“Hey! Calm the fuck down! You’re making a mess that I’ll have to fucking clean up after you leave.” Her words were sharp, loud and felt liquid hot on her tongue. It was a sensation she hadn’t felt in a while, but it was familiar. Old and routine, it reminded her of home. The way she used to snap at people at who were too open about their opinions and scowl at the stares she got whenever she was seen out with her siblings. She decided, she didn’t like it. She held her hand out to him, brown eyes dark and narrowed. “Come on. There’s a proper first aid kit out back and I might even help patch you up. Can you get there by yourself or do I need to carry you?”

Anyone who did not jump at the first opportunity to get the authorities involved when it came to a limping man dragging his blood across company floor fell into one of three categories: the indifferent type, which she'd proven not to be the moment she came toward him instead of staying to her own devices across the room; the sort who have seen this sort of instance dozens of times before, and likely would see it dozens of times after, also marked off the list by her earlier statement; and, lastly, the sort he could not wrap his mind around. Under less frantic ( read: blood spilling) circumstances, he may have afforded this the brain space it would take to attempt to figure her and her motives out. As it stood, he was pretty convinced he was dying. Why on Earth she would fail to call the cops simply because he told her it was out of the question felt pretty inferior to Heaven's ( Hell's?) swiftly approaching door.[break][break] Not that he would have had long to try to sleuth it. Nikki's little show of a hissy fit obviously wasn't settling too nicely with the stranger who, in her own words, was going to have to deal with this after the immediate thread was done and over with, corpse left behind or otherwise. “ Hey! Tragically, Nikki was nonsense packaged pretty in the form of a man... and a barely functioning one at that. If there was some comfort to be found in the fact that they were both going to suffer through this, he certainly wasn't finding it. At the very least, he was smart enough to stop shoving things and kicking up more crimson.[break][break] “ Come on. Everest barely concealed under foundation named compassion told him in words just as biting to say 'no', for if he admitted that he needed to be carried, it meant that he wasn't deserving of the patch up job at all. It was fear, then, the likes of which he loathed to admit was there at all that kept that stupid single word locked up behind his lips. If he told her he'd be fine on his own only to collapse in a heap on her floor, she'd probably just yell at him again. Best to be honest. “ I... Despite the fact that he was slumped in his seat, she could tell that the kid wasn’t small. He was at least a few inches taller than her. Even with the height, the boy was far from intimidating. The impromptu tantrum he’d pulled had made him lose all capacity to be threatening in her eyes. Sure, all the blood and probably criminal status of the stranger stressed her out a little. But it didn’t scare her too much. Her biggest fear at the moment was that the outcome of this whole… situation might result in a death. More specifically, the death of the big, bloody baby sitting in front of her.

“B...better safe than sorry, I-I guess.” That was something. She could work with that.

“Alright, okay.” She muttered quietly. She shuffled closer, not bothering to step over the blood anymore. She’d be getting enough blood on her just by getting him through the diner that avoiding it barely mattered. Blood stains weren’t impossible to get out of clothing or anything. At the moment, Joan was too tired to care about it. “Come on then.” It was hard to tell where the worst of it was, the amount of blood he was covered in made it near impossible to properly guess. But he needed to be moved and it needed to be done quickly. His height would probably make the task a little difficult, but it was either that or bleed out in the diner booth.

The brunette stooped down to get to him, grabbing his arm and slinging it around her shoulders while she busied herself with getting an arm around his torso. She didn’t really ask before doing so, it was kind of implied that she’d have to touch him anyway. She definitely wasn’t going to fucking bridal carry him through the diner. Besides, this was the easiest way to move him. Honestly, they’d be lucky if no one called the cops while they were in the back. The crimson all over the floor made it look like there’d been a murder, and Joan prayed to god that the bloodied guy in her arms hadn’t killed anyone tonight.
