A heart of gold used to be such a thing. The golden boy, the bright future of the Ryans.
[break][break]
A shell so bright, dimmed over hardships, over years of pain.
[break][break]
Naturally he is kind, he does do his best to put others above himself, but it only goes so far. They leave him... they break him and they don't even know it. He lets them in and without anyone to be able to stop it, they are taken away. Growing up, he was always taught to never judge a book by its cover, that somewhere inside, everyone had a good about them. Having only one younger sibling, he had grown to know how to look after someone, so when it came to someone being hurt, even if someone is a bad person, he will do whatever he can to help out.
[break][break]
What he keeps hidden is the depression within him. Simple tasks can send Kodiak's mind astray, his wall to hide these emotions can crack, even shatter, revealing just what he's had to endure over the years. When he is upset, he will try to isolate himself from everyone, wishing himself gone. Kodiak believes he himself is bad luck. However, a slight flaw comes with this depression; anger. He never means to, but he will lash out with harsh words, blaming both himself and possibly others around him.

The key to a human is the heartbreak they go through to get through life.[break][break]
At the ages of 19 and 20, Lucie James and Kellen Lockwood had a small baby boy. Despite the beautiful miracle, their chances of being parents at that moment were on a thin, heartbreaking line. This baby was small, weak, and had a very low chance of survival; there was absolutely no hope for him. Seeing as they refused to give up until the very end, the small child, whom they named Kodiak, spent several days, around a week and a half, in the hospital in a incubator, fighting for his life. When every last hope for him was lost, there was a sudden turn around. Kodiak was going to survive; their first child was not going to die.
[break][break]
Many years passed, and when Kodiak was seven years old, he started to change a bit. He grew a major, and weird love for duct tape. Slightly concerning to his parents, he adored the very sticky tape, always putting it on everything he could find; including his mouth. As well, he began to fear fireworks, the loud banging making the poor child scared beyond belief. He was scrawny and weak, but he wanted to do everything to change that. Even at such a young age, Kodiak knew he was weak, and wanted to make sure that as he grew, he'd get stronger. With only eating healthy foods, Kodiak never truly had a sweet tooth or a taste for milk. Now, he did eat various junk foods every so often, but he made sure that he wouldn't become one of those candy crazed children that he saw in his classes. Milk, however, was something he despised. Not a soul knew why, but after growing out of the baby bottles, Kodiak would gag at the thought of having to have milk.
[break][break]
When Kodiak was 10, he ended up in the hospital from multiple fainting spells. They'd been going on for weeks on end before his parents decided to get him checked out. It was a lengthy progress, with little promising results, but he was sent home after a long week. When he got home, he was surprised to find out his mother was going to be having another child. This both excited him and made him a bit sad. Would this replace him in his parents hearts? Once reassured countless times, Kodiak grew more and more excited as the months passed. Would he get a baby sister? Maybe he would be able to have a baby brother, and teach him things and be the best big brother he could be. When Alexander was born, Kodiak was ecstatic. A brother; someone he would look after and care for through thick and thin, and that's what he did.
[break][break]
At 15, Kodiak was still the child who had a bit of medical issues. Despite them going away as he grew older, Alexander was the healthiest child. He didn't need doctors or use up the money they had. It was as if his parents hated him. No... his parents acted like they hated him. His brother was the light in their eyes even more now. A strong and healthy five year old, one that would make them proud. It angered him so much. Why? What was so wrong with him? It wasn't his fault he had these problems! They were getting better, he wasn't going to the hospital so much now. A slight depression took over the 15 year old. It took only a week before he ran away from home. It took another week before he was brought back, parents pissed to no end and a small brother crying his eyes out, not wanting his big brother to leave him. But Kodiak knew he couldn't stay there. Packing as much as he could, Kodiak walked out of his life in England, and took off for America, hoping for a better life.
[break][break]
Within three years, Kodiak had made a new life for himself. Well, as new as he could get. Making acquaintances over his travels for a permanent home kept him going along, even if a dark doom persisted to follow him. Many that he came across were innocent, kind, and a few held a precious spot within his heart. Yet, as he stopped from town to town, people would give him looks, and if he even for a moment was becoming someone's friend, it all got thrown back in his face. They weren't true friends... they hated him too.
[break][break]
Maybe it was just all in his head.
[break][break]
Town after town, each the same, Kodiak was close to giving up on ever finding a place that would accept him. As if to answer his silent prayers, a small town in the state of Michigan deemed to be a place that he could see himself living in for quite some time. Being 18, Kodiak felt that maybe they would believe he was just a renegade teenager, out to just be a terror; no he was met with kindness, much like the previous towns, yet something was different. He felt like he had to be here, that it was home. Or maybe it was the sweet girl by the name of Haven that intrigued him. For days she showed him around, telling him about each and every person that resided within the town. For once, in a very long time, he felt wanted; maybe even loved. Haven's younger sister Jem pulled at his heart strings. She was just about the cutest little girl he had the pleasure of meeting. Haven and Kodiak grew close, passing the line of friends, yet not dating, despite the few kisses they shared. Things were definitely looking up for the lost boy.
[break][break]
It was around three months later that sent his whole world spiraling down, causing him to lose all hope in happiness. Jem had wanted to go skating, and learn just how to do it, even though she knew Kodiak wasn't the best at it. He never knew that the ice was going to break. They tried so hard to save little Jem, but fate had decided that it was her time, breaking both Haven's and Kodiak's hearts. Weeks went by with icy tensions between the two, both not knowing what to do to deal with the death of a little girl. Kodiak wanted to leave so bad, move on, and forget about happiness. He should have too. Right when things began to get better for them, their bond getting stronger than ever, they fought. Haven blamed Kodiak for not taking better care of Jem, that he could have prevented it. Angered by this, he told Haven to get out of his sights, that he didn't want to look at her. It was like it all happened in slow motion as he watched her turn, beginning to storm off, none of them seeing the car until it struck her. In those moments, Kodiak had lost the one single person he cared about; loved even. And it was then, and the days after as he moved from the town, that he told himself that he wouldn't get close to anyone ever again.
