✦ His mother was the kind of woman who liked to name her children random foreign names because she thought it was "stylish" and "unique". Kaien just thinks it's pretentious when he hasn't even a drop of Japanese blood in him, so he prefers going by his last name. It's not edgy if it's for a good reason.[break][break]
✦ He keeps his hair long partially because he's a little vain, and partially because he's just too lazy to go get it cut. On the other hand, however, he gets easily annoyed by the way it tickles his neck and gets into his face so he strives to keep it tied up (high) as much as possible. ✦ Though he's not a lightweight by any means, he dislikes drinking. He dislikes the dizziness that comes with it, but mostly he hates the tears, because he's one of those crying drunks. He has his own set of scars – some physical, some emotional – and he thinks it foolish, even detestable, to try to bring attention to them or to compare them. Sometimes he tries to understand, he really does, but for the most part, he has little patience for those who try to justify their poor behavior with their pain, a defense that he developed as a result of his own experiences on the other side. That's not to say that he can't be moved to pity, nor is he opposed to lending an open ear to the more mundane, but take it too far and he will not stand to have it.[break][break]
✦ If you were to ask him whether he truly believes in the revolution... his answer will always remain vague, preferring to take a more neutral stance unless pressured into an agreement. Privately, he feels that the Operation will not end the way some of his fellow revolutionists hope, pray, believe it will. He finds the cause admirable, but a little naive. He also, however, believes that this kind of movement is inevitable, and that it's better to run (and end) with it than to turn a blind eye to it. If you can't beat them, join them, so the saying goes, because pfft. The police? Please, they'd have better luck winning the lottery than upholding the justice that they're supposed to.[break][break]
✦ His skin is covered in so many scars, all of them easily concealable so long as he's fully clothed. They are, in his deepest moments of insecurity, a great source of shame. He does not think them beautiful. He does not think them a proof of his survival. What he does think they are is a brand on his mind and body, a reminder of all that was horrible and ugly in his life. Anyone who tries to tell him otherwise will be met with the highest form of contempt and judgement. So in the end, maybe he's just a hypocrite. A terrible, terrible hypocrite. So sue him. He can tell himself not to compare each other's pain, but everyone always secretly thinks that they suffered the most.[break][break]
✦ But in his softer, most common moments, Kaien is not so terrible a person. He tries his best to keep things stable, tries his best to keep things simple. Tries not to think too much, tries not to remember too much. (Not that it always works.) He cares in a very roundabout way, tries to be there as support without it being too obvious. He tries and tries. Being a good person is hard when there are no right answers. But it's all in the little things. Potted plants on the sill, an apartment neat but lived-in. Eggs and coffee for breakfast, scrambled, deviled, fried. Maybe boiled tomorrow, or soaked into some bread. Rain on the windows. Autumn in the trees. Loneliness is in every dusty corner of the heart. Kaien knows. But he's trying, too.[break][break]
