The poetry is in the streets Jesus save us Modernity has failed us
Van gets into these moods where ve feels the need to break routine. They start the moment ve wakes up, and they end-- well, they end whenever the urge feels satisfied.
Today is one of those days.
Van gets out of bed with an itch that cannot be scratched, and it's only when ve opens the fridge, finds it empty, and doesn't feel the urge to order something in, or find a restaurant to go out to. Ve decides today is a good day for grocery shopping, a good day for cooking really.
So, Van gets ready for the day meticulously, steaming out stray wrinkles in ver clothing, and taking ver time picking out what accessories they want to match with their outfit. Hair meticulously styled, make-up flawlessly done, and nails in tip-top shape, it's only then that Van decides ve's ready to take on the day, and the routine is completed with a stylish selfie taken in the floor length mirror in ver room.
It's only then, does ve barge into Nathaniel's room, flicking his lights on and tugging his covers down a little.
"Nath, let's go grocery shopping," Van says, cheerfully.

in the light of day you're running on a blade
Back-to-back graveyard shifts, punctuated by horribly ill-timed calls to the office, turn the prospect of uninterrupted sleep into a tantalizing daydream. After a few hellish days, he finally manages to extricate himself from the clutches of ungrateful patients and even less grateful bureaucrats, dropping into a blessedly dead sleep once home as usual.
Unfortunately, it doesn't last, as usual. It feels like no time has passed before Van's voice, much cheerier than Nate can ever fathom being, breaks the quiet. He sinks lower under the covers in response, smothering his face into the pillow to shut out the sudden influx of light.
"Yeah, 'kay," he mumbles and doesn't move any further. Frankly he has no clue what he's just agreed to, but maybe Van would leave him alone now.

Van knows intimately what it's like to be overworked, underappreciated and practically running on empty. Perhaps not in the same way Nath does, but ve gets it. Ve's done vis fair share of back-to-back, nonstops, and ve's had clients walk out, satisfied but unthankful. You'd think it'd make him sympathetic to Nath in moments like these, when ve can see vis best friend so physically exhausted, and make ver take back vis words.
And usually, that is Van, but the eight years of cohabitation have given ver the audacity and confidence to know something should not be done, but still do it anyway.
So, at the sound of Nath's "yeah, 'kay," Van moves to completely throw off vis friend's covers, a giant grin on vis face. Knowingly or not, Nath has said yes, and Van will always gladly take advantage of his friend's half-asleep state when he wants to.
"Good, get up and dressed then!" Van says as ve makes his way out of Nath's room. "Grocery shopping is best done early in the day."
Ve pauses in the door way, "I'll make you coffee, so don't take too long, okay?"

in the light of day you're running on a blade
Worth a shot. Dreams dashed, Nate sits upright, blinking to clear the heavy fog still swaddling his head and mantling his thoughts. Tempting to let gravity lay his leaden body down to rest again, but years of practice forcing himself awake at odd hours keeps him from backsliding. The fog eventually dissipates enough to make Van's speech comprehensible, and he catches the tail-end of ver sentence: "...best done early in the day."
Hopefully not that early in the day. Though he knows Van wouldn't be so cruel.
He appreciates, too, that ve gives him the time and space to get ready to face the day at his own pace. The promise of coffee especially helps soften the rude awakening. "I'll try," he bites back a yawn, "try not to burn the coffee, okay?"
When Nate enters the kitchen, groomed, dressed, and mostly presentable — his hair's still dripping at the ends, but it'd dry soon — the waft of coffee that greets him smells promising, at least. Maybe Van has finally succeeded at convincing their espresso machine to produce a decent cup.

Van laughs and waves off Nath's comment before ve heads into the kitchen. Burn the coffee? Who does Nath think ve is?
(Really, the assumption is perfectly reasonable. Van is an okay cook, but ve's awful at making coffee. Vis mouth is just better at tasting it, than vis hands are at making it. Will he admit it? Of course not.)
However, today the coffee gods have decided to look upon Van and bless ver. Ve still fights with the espresso machine yes, but eventually what comes out is much better than what ve usually makes. Ve finishes vis drink long before Nath shows up in the kitchen, but keeps Nath's mug on the electric, temperature-controlled coaster they bought that came in a set with their electric mugs. Ve sets the temperature on vis phone, and then signs into one of vis mobile games for the log-in bonus before switching to an app for note-taking to jot down what ve wants to pick up.
At the sound of Nath walking into the kitchen, Van looks up, grinning from ear to ear, "I made the espresso machine my bitch today, are you proud of me?"
Then, ve gestures to coaster and mug on the side away from where ve's standing. "I kept your mug warm for you too, but it's not my fault if it doesn't taste as good. It was in peak condition when I drank mine."

Towel draped over his shoulders, Nate claims his usual seat at the kitchen island and observes Van's triumphant expression over the countertop. He props his chin up on one elbow, eyes crinkling at the corners. "You sure showed it," he agrees. Hard to say whether Nate was joking or not, when most of what left his lips carried the same deadpan delivery. Van had gotten good at telling the difference, though, honed by long association.
He pulls the gestured mug towards him (splurging on "smart mugs" was worth it, even as glorified hand-warmers) and peers into the cup. The espresso had nice crema, especially considering Van's dark past of failed attempts. He takes a sip — he prefers his coffee a bit cooler than piping hot, anyways — and can't help baiting Van a little.
Mostly because ve knows he's honestly impressed. "Uh huh. Are you sure you didn't give me the reject?"

Van makes an offended noise at Nath's comment, but the grin on vis lips betrays any sort of implied negative feelings.
"You trust me that little?" Van says dramatically, putting vis hand palm flat against vis chest, right over vis heart. "I'm so hurt. Next time, you can make the coffee."
Honestly though, that would probably be the preferable situation.
Yes, Van had a stroke of luck today, but normally it's Nath one who gets the machine to do it's best, if it's doing anything at all. Van is perfectly okay with instant coffee, but Nath- he's a coffee freak, and it's probably one of the few things Van will never understand about him.
Van's phone vibrates, and ve unlocks it to check the notification, and it's a text from their dog sitter. Ve looks up from vis phone to Nath, "Dog sitter wants to know if we're picking up the dog today, by the way."

Nate doesn't respond to Van's melodramatics — partly because he's enjoying the coffee, partly because for all his insistence on getting a professional-grade espresso machine (their other splurge buy), he doesn't use it much. Although he'd prepared a winning argument at the time of purchase about all the money they'd save by making their own cafe-quality drinks at home, it hasn't stopped Nate from continuing to pad the pockets of cafes everywhere. Starbucks was too convenient to quit.
He sits straighter, perking up at the mention of their furry son. "Our dog's name is John," Nate corrects automatically, as if Van weren't aware, as if they haven't had this exact conversation many times over. He stretches an arm out across the counter, palm up. A silent request for Van's phone. "Don't you miss John at all?"

Van rolls vis eyes at the way Nath visibly straightens up and his words.
Goddamn dog lovers, they're all the same.
For a moment, ve debates not handing over vis phone, but that's just a little too childish for vis tastes. It's not like ve'd really get anything out of withholding it anyway, John the dog will come home eventually.
Ve puts the phone in Nath's hand, and, earlier in their relationship, ve'd ask Nath to be careful, but at this point, ve doesn't think it needs to be said. Nath is... probably the one less clumsy with his hands between the two of them.
"The dog is his nickname. I'm Van, your Nath, he's the dog. It just makes sense." It doesn't, Van just doesn't like dogs. Really, ve tolerates John at best, but ve's pretty John only tolerates him too. It's a mutual understanding.
Van leans toward the island, propping vis elbows up so ve can rest vis chin in the palm of vis hand to watch Nath fiddle with vis phone. "And no, I don't miss him, he probably doesn't miss me either. We only get along because of you anyway."

"That doesn't follow. By your logic, his nickname'd be 'Jo,' not 'the dog.'" Quibbling over semantics with a lawyer — that's the stuff Nate's days off are made of. He doesn't roll his eyes here, exactly, but one eyebrow creeps up inadvertently in skepticism.
Phone in hand, his attention splits between the screen and Van's reply. He reads over the latest text and peruses past ones as well. "John misses you too, but since you don't like him, he usually doesn't go near you." Gaze downcast, he maintains their conversation while scrolling. "John respects your boundaries."
One photograph gives him pause. John on his back, soliciting belly rubs, head and paws cocked adorably. Nate turns the phone around to show Van, eyes wordlessly reproachful. Conveying an unvoiced message: How could you not miss this?
"You're off too, right? Then we could go today," he says instead. His forgotten mug exhales thin wisps of steam, quickly cooling when uncoupled from its coaster.

Van rolls vis eyes- ve's not going to start an argument with Nath over their dog's name. John the dog's name can be whatever ve wants it to be. Sometimes, when Nath isn't around, ve calls him Egghead, after Nath because that's what he can be sometimes, a fucking egghead.
Van leans away from the counter and crosses vis arms along vis chest, "Good for him, saves me the hassle of having to teach him my boundaries."
If Van had to worry about vis closet getting dog fur on it along with lint, wrinkles and stains, ve might've started graying early, and that's not a good look for ver. Ve already knows ve wouldn't look good with gray hair. As he watches Nath turn the phone around to face ver, he think Nath might look good with gray hair though.
Ve doesn't even spare a glance at the photo, ve's already seen it. It did make ver feel a little affectionate the first time, but ve already knows a second look won't bring up the same feelings. They were fleeting, unrepeatable. "Yeah I'm off, but we have to go grocery shopping first."
"Can I have my phone back now?" Van asks, holding vis hand out.

Van, he's noticed, has a habit of crossing vis arms when delivering ultimatums. Which occurs with fair frequency, more often than one'd expect from Van's otherwise free-spirited ways. Stubborn in certain matters, where he's yielding. So Nate lets Van claim the last word without protest, and they shelve the topic for another day.
He passes the phone back, having utterly neglected to reply to the dog sitter as intended. A low hum of understanding slips out his throat as his mind fills in the blank. Best done early in the day: grocery shopping. It may be the first time he's properly heard Van mention grocery shopping this morning, but he makes no sign of it.
"Did you make the shopping list?"

Van takes the phone back, sending a message to the dog sitter that says, will pick him up later, thanks!. Ve's glad Nath hadn't gotten a chance to message the sitter himself. They probably would've had a big change in plans if he had. Dog first, grocery shopping second. Realistically though, that scenario probably would've ended with Nath staying home with John, leaving Van to shop by verself.
That would've been so boring. Half the fun of this trip is Nath joining ver after al. Their busy schedules leave them barely any time for themselves, let alone each other.
Sometimes, friends matter more than sleep.
(Van ignores the fact he can only think that because he wasn't the one forcefully woken up today. Ignorance is bliss.)
"Of course, I have," Van says, but it's not mean-spirited, more playful than anything. "Was there something you wanted to add?"

"Treats for John," Nate answers, which Van had likely anticipated in the first place but was too mulish to include on the list without his prompting. Newly invigorated — the caffeine kicking in, or anticipation for the day ahead — he knocks back the last dredges of tepid espresso before wordlessly venturing back to the bedroom.
Towel deposited on top of their mounting laundry heap, he reappears in the living room minutes later, wallet and phone pocketed, hair damp and more disheveled than before. "Ready?"

Van sighs dramatically. It was the expected answer, but still— a person could hope. Ve's sure they've still got treats for the dog named John in the cabinet, but still adds the request to the list on ver phone.
It really wasn't any of ver business whether or not John ate all his treats before they expired.
Ve goes over to the door to grab ver jacket from the closest, and grimaces a little at the state of Nathaniel's appearance when he returns. "I can't believe I let myself be seen with you in public sometimes," Van says dramatic, but lacking any sort of bite. It's filled with a sort of exhausted affection. After all, Nathaniel's disheveled appearance just makes Van look all the more put together.
A quick pat down of ver pockets to check for ver every day wallet and keys leads into the front door being held open and Van gesturing for Nathaniel to go first.
