The repetitive twang of a stringed instrument resounded bluntly in the music store, every stroke of her finger raising the pitch a barely noticeable amount.[break][break]
Another slow, uneventful day. This had to be the easiest job on the market. The only thing that saved it from being the most boring job was Aister's passion for music and instruments, so despite its meager payout, she found it satisfying to commit to. Every two out of five days, almost no one visited the music store, not even to request a tune up of their instruments. Not too surprising no one can afford a 5K plus grand piano under this economy. she mused indifferently. There was not much to do but put on her headphones and daydream at the register, but she was grateful that she'd earned her boss's trust to an extent that he pretty much never had to visit and check up on her, so she would spend some time practicing on the guitars or fiddling around with the pianos. The only notable chore, which Aister performed diligently, was the occasional need for tuning of the instruments on sale, and she was a perfectionist at it. While some people had a habit of cleaning away dust and specks obsessively, Aister found fulfillment within her part-time job by tuning every one of the instruments to perfection regularly.[break][break]
Getting lost in the simple aspects of the moment like this nearly made it possible to temporarily forget that she was an active participant in a highly wanted group of radicals and would be risking her life at the next moment's notice while gathering resources for her comrades in the form of illegal weaponry and basic nourishment--two very important resources for the survival of the revolution's members. It was amusing to her how well she performed at her double life. I'm just too OP is all! Aister boasted to herself as she placed the acoustic guitar she had been tuning back up on the display wall. She then moved to the next section over, adorned with more guitars, but of the electric variety, and carefully took down the first one, a shiny black and white paint coating its smooth, polished surface. Aister returned to the fold-able metal chair in the center of the small store that she used for seating while she tuned the music store's instruments. The air was again filled with the strumming of an instrument, albeit softer and blunter, as was the difference between an acoustic guitar and an electric one when not hooked up to the amp. [break][break]
And in that moment, the sound of tuning was joined by a clash of bells, betraying the news that someone had just opened the door to the shop. Aister looked up from her task at hand to see who'd come by to finally break the usual routine. Despite having her hands full, she'd have to quickly put stuff out of the way in order to greet a potential customer.

I AIN'T GOT NOBODY

For a woman (girl) who liked to boast her bravery in the face of adversity, Frieda was a woman (girl) who could only find herself shaking in her boots at even the slightest of inconveniences. Dared to drink some frightening concoction of various sodas and condiments mixed into one? Frightening. Put on the spot to make a phone call to her school regarding finances? Terrifying. Actually making good on her word to visit her (tentative) new found friend at her (supposedly) only place of (honest) work? (Dang near) impossible. However, as the over abundance of parentheticals would say, she wasn't entirely incapable of conquering her nerves long enough to input the given address into her phone and let Google's monotonous voice lead the way to to this music store of mystery. She was just... still shaking in her boots, was all. It may have been too soon to call Aister her friend – why would someone that cool want to actually spend time with someone like her, after all – but being slipped an address across the counter at the coffee shop was almost like being slipped a number, and if she didn't take this bull by the horns, she'd end up like Lorelei, as far as her friend (love) life was concerned. The most terrifying concept of them all.[break][break]
“Am I glad to see you here!” were the first words to burst past her lips upon entering the significantly-less-mysterious-than-previously-thought shop. Aister herself was set up on a chair in the middle of the shop, fingers plucking seemingly absent-mindedly at strings and her person seemingly the only one in sight. In truth, the brunette had been prepared for crowds many times this size, even if that number was only a measly little five. Worse, still, she'd been frightened she'd shown up on a day when the person she wished to see wouldn't be around. How would she have explained to the other workers that she was too poor to actually buy anything here, much less that she was so musically inept that she'd sooner break an instrument on accident than pull a note from its strings or holes? Part of her wanted to ask about the lack of people... but maybe that was in bad taste? For now, at least, she kept it to herself.[break][break]
“Are you... playing something?” she asked, cutting the distance between them in strides. That certainly was an electric guitar in her maybe-friend's hands – and what other reason did a person have to hold an instrument than to play it? “Oh, oh – what song?”

"Am I glad to see you here!"[break][break]
"Welcome to the Pike Place Music Store! How may I he--" The generic, over-practiced set of words which she was expected to use with every visitor to the store came tumbling out of her mouth as she was quickly pulling the guitar strap over her head so that she could put it away, and was interrupted by Aister's surprise catching her breath completely. Of course, she was cute as all heck, just as before, if not even more so now that she was wearing a casual outfit and not the coffee barista uniform. Aister's gaze glanced briefly over her pretty hair, wavy near the bottom, and met Frieda's copper eyes with her own crimson ones. "OH! Hey!! It's you!" She really did come!!! "Welcome! I'm glad you made it here!" Aister had been prepared to greet a customer, but not this extra special visitor in particular. She honestly had not even expected the cute new employee she hit on while ordering a cup of coffee at the hideout's public cafe to actually stop by when given the address and invited to do so, so that they may chat more freely while one was not on active duty at her job and both were not being watched by the members of a secretive and potentially dangerous organization. Well, it wasn't like Aister thought they'd have a problem with one of their members flirting with a regular civilian, but she'd simply rather not get questioned or teased too much about it by her fellow comrades later on.[break][break]
And the fact that Frieda really did accept and go through with Aister's proposal to meet her at her workplace made her heart flutter happily more than she was prepared for. "Are you... playing something?" The visitor asked in a pretty voice as she walked towards where Aister was just standing up and getting ready to put the guitar in her hands back on the shelf. "Oh, oh - what song?"[break][break]
"Oh, haha, actually I was just tuning this one up." Aister replied cheerfully. She paused and returned back to the center of the room to meet Frieda. "Wanna see? You're welcome to try playing it if you like! Your name was... Fr-ieda, right?" Aister remembered how Frieda's name wasn't pronounced quite how she expected it would be after reading her name tag on her employee uniform. Not Fry-ada, but Free-da. Right, English was weird, but she at least knew that the 'ie' in words wasn't always pronounced like 'pie'. However maybe the name Frieda had foreign origins? Aister made a mental note to Google that later out of earnest curiosity.[break][break]
What song? Frieda's words echoed in her mind as she gushed inwardly in the moment of getting the chance to talk to this adorably sweet girl again when the remembrance that she herself actually knew how to play guitar hit her in the back of her mind. "Ah, if you'd like, I can even play something for ya! I know a few songs. I'll make it worth the trip, promise!" Aister smiled brightly, feeling energetic about possibly showing off her skills to Frieda. Truthfully, Aister had every intention of seeing if she could get her new friend to fall for her, and while she wasn't really as forward as one would expect when it came to the real deal, considering her lack of hesitancy to drop some flattering comments to a cute girl she saw, for the first time, she wanted to give it her best shot. Even if it were to not succeed, if she were to be rejected, or if her audience member didn't even swing that way, Aister wasn't the sort of person to regret or feel ashamed of her attempts. She hoped that the pretty brunette won't be scared off into leaving right after arriving. She considered even that she could be making the poor girl really uncomfortable, what with this whole invitation to her workplace and the fact that there was no one else here but them.

The sheer excitement that Aister radiated, beaming with a smile that dazzled brighter than the sun and words more befitting for someone of genuine notoriety than someone as plain and useless as a coffee barista of all people – that was something she had definitely not prepared herself for. There was only one reasonable explanation that her brain could pull together for it, and that was that the guitarist was simply such a vibrant person that anyone and everyone was met with such warm reception. In some ways, that flew in the face of all typical standards of what defined “cool”. To Frieda, however, that someone could be that openly warm to any and all and still come off as a total badass just made her even more of a total badass, no questions asked.[break][break] Still, she wasn't used to being looked at like that. Even if she would falsely boast of a great many friends and on-point people skills, the ruse let loose its faults as she faltered nervously under that happy gaze.[break][break] “ I was just tuning this one up,” the raven-haired woman said, standing up from her chair in the same moment that the brunette's feet fell to a halt an arm length and a half away. It was sad to see that her arrival had been so poorly timed that the other was just wrapping up, but if it was tuning, she supposed, maybe she hadn't really missed out on much. “ You're welcome to try playing it if you like!”[break][break] The question of the pronunciation of her name went entirely missed, trailing on the coattails of an offer like that, and Not-Fry-da found herself sputtering over the words entirely. Bold of Aister to assume she had any idea how to hold a guitar, much less play it at all. She soon decided the thought was worth dismissing as nothing too serious, and nothing to question against that number of spoken 'no's, for sure. And since she received no corrections on her pronunciation and remembrance of Frieda's name, Aister hoped with a spark of inner triumph that she had gotten it right.[break][break] This transitioned quickly into her next motivation: time to show her skillz. (Yes, with a snazzy 'z' for coolness effect!) " Yeah, you got it! Here, have a seat! Since I'm gonna be sitting too." In short, fluid motions, Aister grabbed another of the store's cheap plastic chairs that was sitting off to the side and slid it next to hers before hearing an unexpected question from Frieda that she quickly realized was a joke, and...[break][break] Cute.... Too heckin' cute. The 'desire to protect' surged up among the myriad of other emotions she was feeling right now. It took all of her points in charisma to keep those overflowing emotions in check. This was the situation for Aister starting since Frieda walked in the door just moments ago on this day made better. Aister couldn't even hold back a giggle at that statement as she was moving to swap out the half-tuned guitar in her possession for an already-tuned one, a dark red guitar with wooden texture in its decal. " Haha, nope! You're a VIP guest, so it's all free! ♡" She chirped with another bright smile. The errands around the shop were finally completed once Aister had plugged the guitar up to the amp and readjusted its settings.[break][break] Aister took a seat and quickly skimmed through the small list in her mind of solo-able songs she knew how to play. She was no professional by any means, but she could at least boast that she had the experience of a guitarist who practiced a lot, just as a relaxing hobby for her own enjoyment. Just a few test strums to make sure that the feeling and memory returned to her fingers preceded a surprisingly gentle tune as Aister decided to skip over the super loud, aggressive intro to this song for this occasion. Her expression grew stoic as she focused on the technique when the song immediately transitioned into a melody where the guitar sang high, racing between octaves in a single breath. Then the chorus arrived, and although Aister had no drum to back her up, the instinctive bob of her chin and slight tapping of her foot to the beat hinted otherwise. The rest of the song eventually came to pass, but it would come as a tiny internal shock to Aister to realize this was the first time she wasn't playing a guitar with only herself as an audience, lost in her own world. Had it not been for the very humbling knowledge that the store worker likely would have said something of the same effect to any customer who strolled through the door, steam might have just come shooting out of the side of her ears. As it was, she managed to take up her offered seat with a stuttered, “ Th-thanks,” and prayed to any god who would listen that Aister wouldn't notice the red creeping its way up her neck and ears.[break][break] Front row, VIP seat to a show, instead. Anyone would be lucky to share the company of the guitarist in just about any context, but there was obvious skill behind the pluck of her finger against the strings, and it didn't take long for the brunette to pick out just what was being played for her to hear. King James: not a personal favorite, but a tune remembered and well appreciated. Idly, she wondered if the raven-haired girl knew any Rush, or the more recent Dream Theater, but asking for an encore seemed a bit too much.[break][break] By the time the final chords had been struck, so, too, was Frieda struck. Star struck, more specifically, and looking at her companion like she was Atlas holding up the world beneath her shoulders. “ That was awesome! Buckethead, right? Oh my god, I've never seen someone play that good in person.” Never seen anyone play at all in person, really, but the finer details hardly hampered her ability to gush. “ Are you in a band?” Without pause, not even waiting to hear the “yes” she wouldn't have even been able to believe, she said, “ I've gotta hear you guys play!” [attr="class","beyonddarkpostleft3"]

Where as she would always willingly trap her mind within the world of music in her own head, this was the first time that Aister realized she might have to snap back to the real world, because she wasn't the only one in it anymore. A new routine, not the usual, in which she ought to consider her audience's presence, changed things up significantly. That's right, this was where people typically would react to her finishing performance, grade her skills, and then... Then....? She laughed happily as she spontaneously made that comment in the spur of the moment, her true thoughts though, giving the last chord she was still holding one last strum as if for effect or in reaction, or both. She nearly trailed off as she briefly hesitated over how she would explain her complicated situation, only made so by her own choices even she didn't understand fully. There was no way that someone like the musician would mean ‘adorable’ in a genuine way ( Frieda was, at least in her own eyes, about as adorable as a burlap sack, at least appearance-wise), and the only other possible reason for saying it was to make note of how excited she’d gotten over one measly performance… even if it was a little stunning. Still, even after being made aware of the fact that she was getting a bit too excited over the whole situation, she couldn’t help the genuine surprise that took over her at the knowledge that the other girl wasn’t, in fact, in a band after all. “ Well, I guess it’d be pretty cool to join one some day, and you’ll definitely be invited to hear a concert then!”[break][break] Oh – well. Even better than today!” the barista said, stars practically dazzling in her eyes as she clenched a fist and gave back into that enthusiasm from earlier. It wasn’t an entirely difficult picture to paint in the mind: Aister with electric guitar in hand, front stage and center, just like in those old Yes concerts she’d watch on Youtube. What sort of music would they play, she wondered a little too deeply before realizing that reality was waiting for her to catch up with it. “ I’d say I’d help you start one, but pretty much the only thing I know how to play is Taps on the harmonica… Real impressive, right?”[break][break] Lorelei hadn’t had the money to rent her an instrument when band class in school had come around, never mind buying one outright; learning an instrument had just never been an option with the shambles that society tried to label her earlier home life. If that was a blush she spotted, Aister would have to guess, at the least, it was only because she may have overdone it a teensy bit on the super duper subtle flirting, and her new friend couldn't have been easily prepared to react to that. Or perhaps it was something else. She'd have to admit to herself that she was curious (and a tad hopeful).[break][break]
Aister immediately was entranced by Frieda's hyper enthusiasm, blissfully unaware that said enthusiasm was envisioning herself in a different future where she was following a career in music. It was the route in life Aister had actually envisioned for herself a number of times were she not giving her service and risking the rest of her life for a secret organization, crossing lawful boundaries for the greater good... Such a future on stage playing her guitar probably wouldn't fit alongside the path she had chose; Aister had resigned to this reality with controlled remorse.[break][break]
Taps on the harmonica? "Ohh~ right! The army ceremony song. But hey, that's a good start!" Much better than nothing, that tune had a unique progression of notes, Aister imagined playing such a vast range on a wind instrument ought to take some level of practiced skill. Aister personally had less experience with wind instruments, not because she wouldn't have been curious to try them, but just that she'd been attracted to the guitar above all other musical instruments from an early age.[break][break]
"Hmm, since I was pretty young, maybe it was like third grade? I've always liked seeing rock bands in videos or even live if I was lucky." She mused freely aloud as she happily retold her life story to a lesser degree. "Yeah, around that time I found my parent's old throwaway acoustic guitar. But it still worked, and they didn't want it. And I'm all self-taught! Although I didn't really start getting better until I had access to the internet. Plenty of tutorials online, so it's super easy!" Aister brushed a stray lock of her long hair over her shoulder as she tilted the guitar in her lap up for emphasis. "In fact, if you have a favorite band, I can try to learn one of their songs and play it just for you some time!"[break][break]
