Valerie was trying to mind her own business. It was just a difficult task sometimes. Today was one of those times. Valerie walked down the bread aisle, pausing occasionally to read the labels. Behind her were a couple of women. They knew each other – Val guessed neighbors – and spoke so animatedly Val couldn’t help but hear.

“You know that singer who keeps appearing? A Paul or something? My daughter is completely obsessed.” They went on, in hushed voices, punctuated occasionally by a burst of laughter or an exclamation of “Really?” the women kept going through the same aisles Val was, and her irritation mounted by the minute.

From their conversation, she gathered that they were talking about a popular male singer, who didn't get as much schooling as they'd have liked, and who made music they didn't approve of. The conversation went to how their daughters were too obsessed; they were being led “astray” by this male idol.

Valerie was ready to throw something. She turned around to face the women.

“I'm sorry, you guys were so loud I couldn't help but hear you. And whenever I hear something unreasonable, I can't help but want to correct it. Instead of blaming your daughters’ poor grades on someone you barely know, maybe you should be disciplining them. Besides, I'm sure that idol worked hard to get where he is now. Perhaps your daughter's should could learn that from him?” The women stood in shocked silence. Deciding that she had made enough of a scene, Valerie calmly walked away to finish her shopping in the cleaning section.
