7:30 AM. The glowing green letters greeted Valerie as she walked into her clinic. The lights automatically flickered on. She pulled up the curtains to show that her office was open. Tall downtown buildings surrounding her office ensured that on the off chance that the sun wasn’t hidden behind clouds, it still wouldn’t reach her windows. Shaking her head, she went to check on her storeroom. [break][break]

The hum of the ceiling fan filled the room and the ventilation kept the room at a constant 10 degrees Celsius and a low humidity. In the corner of the room, there was a refrigerator. In all, Valerie carried a wide range of topical creams, antibiotics, etc. She would usually send prescriptions to pharmacies, but she also offered in-office dispensing for anyone with extenuating circumstances. It was a good thing, then, that Washington state had some of the lowes loosest restrictions. [break][break]

Going back to her office, Valerie checked her schedule. No appointments for today. She blew hair out of her face and sat down to do paperwork. Apart from the muffled sounds of the city, there was only the scratching sound of pen on paper. [break][break]

Valerie wasn't sure how much time had passed when she got up to take a stretch. After stretching her arms and upper body, she decided to go for a walk. She cleaned up her desk, putting the papers in the folders they belonged in, and headed for the door. Not paying attention, she walked straight into the door as someone opened it from the other side. “Ouch…” Valerie rubbed her head and took a step back. She then peeked around the door. Was it a client? Valerie put on her best business smile. “Hello, how can I help you today?”

Meetings with potential buyers packed the coming days. Noura couldn't afford to spit her lungs in front of them. Even if it annoyed her, she had to be reasonable and decided to look for the fastest solution. She got in her car and drove without thinking twice. Once she arrived at her destination, she checked her cellphone, sent several messages then got out of the vehicle. A shiver slid down her spine. How did she catch something? The air conditioning? Someone at the office? Some people had been sick in the past weeks. The accumulated fatigue had probably weakened her body.[break][break]

Even a woolen coat wasn't enough to keep her warm. Muttering to herself, she folded her arms, strode across the street, and waltzed right into a building. Perhaps she should have called. A deep sigh passed her lips while she grabbed a handle. Her fingers released their grip at the sudden noise. Well, at least, someone was here. A reassuring thought.[break][break]

"Good morning, Valerie," Noura tilted her head and peered through the half-opened door. "Have you some appointments soon? If not, could you examine me?" Coughing interspersed the sentences. [break][break]

At least, being sick made her less snappy than usual.

Valerie stepped back, opening the door to allow the tall, tanned woman in. “No, I don’t have any appointments today. Come on in!” Valerie gestured into the room. As the stranger walked in, Valerie took in her appearance. Thick, winter coat. It made sense given the rain and overall chilly weather, but was somewhat of an overkill. She noted the shivering; a fever perhaps. The coughing only added to her concern. [break][break]

Valerie frowned. Of course, with such general symptoms as these, the possibilities ranged anywhere from the common cold to the flu to pneumonia. And recently, a particularly nasty and relatively unknown disease was going around. The small amount of information available on said disease were from patient’s experience and mainly consisted of possible symptoms. Well, hopefully that wasn’t it. “What are you coming in for today?” Valerie asked as they moved through her office. [break][break]

“Let’s get some your vitals and your weight and height first.” Valerie walked the coughing woman into a seperate room. Against the wall was a stadiometer and a scale. Valerie motioned towards them. “Shoes off please.” After making note of those measurements, Valerie proceeded to take her pulse, blood oxygen levels, and blood pressure. She grabbed a thermometer from a drawer and took Noura’s temperature as well. Valerie bit her lip. Yup, Noura was running a fever. Might as well ask her about her symptoms as well. “So, what sort of symptoms have you been experiencing?”[break][break]
