Hideki wasn’t exactly seeking company at this point in time – well, that was more of a lie. Good weather, where it was mostly cloudy out and most people at work or in school, it was just relaxing. He had worked a long shift and he had woken up from his catnap with his current feline roommates using him as a bed. Black hair dusted in his eyes as they scanned the gardens. It wasn’t exactly an obscure place for him to go anymore, not since he had found it. Hideki was rarely a café man, finding the smell of coffee too overbearing and the clacking of keys making him think he was at work. Calling dreadful names with the forced enthusiasm as a cheerleader for the losing team made him yawn and want to move on.
Staying in all that hustle and bustle was enough drips in the full cup of water to almost run over. So much rustling clothes, squeaky shoes against the tile floor in the office, car alarms blasting him like drums on either side of his head. While the gardens weren’t the quietest spot in Seattle, it was quiet enough to let him breathe. He enjoyed the quiet nature walk- but only when it was cloudy, maybe even threatening to rain. The strain on his right shoulder that nagged at him reminded him that there were cats in the garden he tended to feed as well, making it his altruistic one-time action for the day.
The colors sang to him in quiet hums as he passed through the gates and deeper into the garden. Bamboo and other flowers helped change the rugged and asphalt smells from his lungs. There was a fountain next to a covered bench that he liked to sit on and just relax. He had a new coding book he was planning on reading while the cats ate – but he hoped it wasn’t too busy in the area. He was relieved when it was empty, and he felt the wind whip through the area.
“Rain is coming.” He murmured to himself before he sat his backpack down on one of the benches. There was one a little further away from him, but thankfully it was devoid of another person. Rain must have scared people away.
”Kitty, Kitty, Kitty!” He called, only to be greeted by a black blur and a calico blur leaping over some of the planters to come and greet his call. A small and rare grin decorated his face at the meows. ”Hey girls, my two favorite girls in the garden.” He gently cooed, unzipping the backpack that he had rested on one of the benches to take out two cat-food cans and dumping them out on the ground before disposing of the cans.
It was at that time the sky opened up and torrential rains immediately splattered on the ground with a hiss of anger. He snorted a little, sitting on the bench, glad for the rain. That always drowned out the city and relaxed him.
Thankfully, he was alone...

It was a rare day off. Val had been planning to visit the garden sometime. Japanese gardens weren’t particularly common where she came from; in fact, she hadn’t even heard of it before. So why not pay it a visit today? It was cloudy, which Valerie had come to learn was “good weather” in Seattle. Not bothering to check the forecast, she put on a coat, grabbed her keys, and headed for the garden.[break][break]
Visiting the garden was definitely a good idea. The cool breeze provided a much needed escape from people. Valerie took her time admiring the plants, waterways, and particularly the stone garden. The stone garden, she thought, was something Arizona should have.[break][break]
It wasn’t long before she felt the first drop. Then another. As the rain made dark gray spots on the lighter gray pavement, Valerie cursed her luck. Of course the one time she didn’t have an umbrella it would rain. She looked around. Somehow, without her noticing, the other visitors had already left. As the rain came down harder, Valerie decided it was time to leave. Only, she didn’t remember where she came from. She picked a path at random and started walking. [break][break]
Some ways down the path, she spotted a bench. There were branches over it too. Perhaps she could take shelter there. The skies seemed to encourage her, letting loose more rain than before. Hurrying to the bench, she noticed too late it was already occupied… by several cans of cat food, two cats, and one grumpy looking man. She had no choice but to stand there awkwardly, in front of the bench, but still under the trees. It didn’t help that she was completely drenched.

The rain was so nice. There was something soothing of the water drops on the wet concrete. Almost like a mechanical keyboard, but natural. His nose wrinkled at the thought. Hideki wasn’t sure where that came from – but he was just going to accept it as he was not all there today. He would wait to go back to his car – then park it back into the garage to literally try to never use it. His friends online would tease him because for someone so confident he really hated driving. It’s not so much that Hideki hated it – he more so hated everyone else and was paranoid of their capability. Plus, it was just too busy sometimes and it was easier to walk. He was a man who tried to walk everywhere, sometimes bike.
“Girls, I have to say, the weather is just fetching today.” He spoke to the two cats who paid him no mind, not that he was asking for it. They wanted their food – and he was sure the old lady who fed them hadn’t been around yet. His eyes finally got a glance of something bolting towards him and he raised an eyebrow. People really never did care about the forecast. Did that make him old? Hideki hoped not. He was a young and spry man.
Brown hair and glasses were the first thing he noticed as the person came to a stop, dripping wet. He blinked as he met the other’s gaze. The cats stared at the stranger as well, but then went back to eating. “Rain springs up on people, right?” He gestured to the bench across from him for the other person to take a seat. He wasn’t sure what they were doing just standing there – were they a bit slow to comprehend? Crazy was drawn to him after all.
“Go ahead and take a seat – should pass in a few minutes- forecast said spotty showers.” Hideki felt the need to inform them- since the staring was weird. There was plenty of cover over both benches- and he really didn’t feel like moving. The wooden benches had covering that protected them from the rain for the most part- though it was mostly covered by trees so most people didn’t notice it at first.

Valerie blinked. She could’ve sworn she had heard the man refer to someone as “girls.” Looking around, there was nobody else here. He couldn’t have been talking to the cats, right? Valerie shook her head. She must have heard wrong; the water must have gotten to her ears. It took a moment for her to respond to the person’s invitation. [break][break]
“Huh? Oh sure, thanks.” Realizing just how soaked she was, Valerie sighed. She brushed her hair back with her hands, trying to get the loose strands out of her face. She then took off her jacket and wrung it dry to the best of her ability. She then sat down on the benches on the other side of the cats and rubbed her arms to warm up. Valerie took the time to observe the cats. A black and a calico cat. Seeing as they had no collars, they must be strays. Was the man here feeding them? How sweet. Valerie smiled at the thought. And then she sneezed. Achoo! It came out sounding more like a squeak though. Embarrassed, she scratched the back of her head. The rain showed no signs of stopping. Spotty showers, huh. And the man across the bench didn’t seem like he was going to say much else. So, Valerie took the initiative. She looked up at the man. “So, do you do this often?” Valerie gestured to the cat food on the bench and the cats blissfully munching away. She shifted her position so that she was sitting criss-cross on the bench, facing the cats and the strange man. [break][break]
Not wanting to stare at the person while she waited for a response, she looked down at her hands. She breathed on them to warm them up. At least they were dry now. Valerie looked at the cats in front of her. Slowly reaching out her hand, she scratched the calico cat behind its ears.
