Laptop? Homework? Umbrella? MingYi double and triple checked her bag before leaving her apartment. A new quarter meant that once again she was prepping introduction materials for each class. It also often meant that she would meet new underclassmen, who were sometimes more than a little odd. Luckily for MingYi, her student of the day was someone she had tutored before. A sweet girl called Frieda. Frieda was more or less an ideal student. What she didn’t have in quick thinking, she more than made up with hard work. It also helped that she had a positive attitude.[break][break]
MingYi locked the door behind her, put in earbuds, and headed down the stairs. She had been lucky enough to find an apartment close to the university – close enough to walk most places. The library was one of those places. [break][break]
It was early enough that there weren’t too many people out on campus, so the large fountain had quite a few birds playing in it. MingYi thought back to the first time she visited campus. The guide had told them it was tradition for incoming freshmen to take a swim through the almost pool sized basin surrounding the fountain. Given that Washington was a generally cold state, that had already seemed crazy. But the guide hadn’t been done. Apparently the fountain only got cleaned every 3-4 years; the last time being a couple years before MingYi visited. MingYi had gotten out of that only because she commuted during her undergraduate years. She couldn’t imagine who’d want to go swimming through years old water. [break][break]
She climbed first up the concrete stairs to enter the library then down wooden ones to the “reading room.” It was easy to see why people called this the “Harry Potter library.” The high ceiling supported by gothic arches had simplistic yet elegant chandeliers hanging down every couple of meters. The tables themselves each had a long LED lamp that hung about half a meter above the center of the tables. MingYi found and open table and sat down, waiting for Frieda to show up.
